Well I certainly waited long enough, and my set is pretty old, but it is a sweet set (mits 65909) with little usage. I can't wait to see it afterward.
I have not although I have always wanted to. I am planning to keep this set for a long time as it is used only for gaming and the occasional movie or show. I will post a follow up when it is done.
I just cannot see investing in another set with so many hours left on this one. I would rather spend the cash to tune the old girl up.
You'll love it. I still think my old Rear projection CRT gave some of the best pictures I've seen yet.
It just finished. He started at around 9AM and finished after 3. It looks amazing! While checking out sources I found that the color saturation was off on the Panny RP91 and unfortunately cannot find the firmware anywhere on line to try to fix it.
DTV HD looked great but the real showstopper was Gears2. My son and I were blown away.
I had Craig calibrate for a dark room as we seldom turn the TV on during the day with the exception of Football season so I am really pumped to check it out tonight!
Jon, or anyone else, I am really bummed about the Panny DVD player and might just want to replace it with a BR player. Even without any disks I need something that takes advantage of the new calibration at 480P and if that is the case why not get a bluray player. Problem is, which one?
I want one in the next five minutes!
I can honestly say everyone was right, this was way worth it. Best news is even at 6 years of use there was no burn in so my initial settings helped (even with major gaming). Craig estimates the set at 85% life left. Not bad at all.
lol, I had a nice conversation about our "Old Home" with David Abrams, too. hahaha
Great stuff!
I was not surprised to hear your report of the calibration!
As far as a blu-ray player... I think that a Panasonic BD-35 is a great one. Though, blu-ray players are becoming somewhat scarce rigth now. You may have to wait until the new stuff comes in, next month or so.
Jon is this it?
Panasonic - Blu-ray Disc Player with 1080p Upconversion - DMP-BD35K
Shawn I told Craig you had nothing but great things to say.....
Man you are not kidding about out of stock, looks like I am waiting to find a good player.....
Well I decided to use the 30 day BB window to at least see the results of the set with a in spec player and the only one I could find was the Sony S350. Worst case I find it is not for me and I return it. At least I can check the set out with it sooner.
Watched a movie on Showtime HD on DTV in the night environment and it looked so much better and as many have said , film like. Tonight I will try the new player.
Rental recommendations?
Alright so I spent a loving weekend with my new set. It is fricken amazing the way it looks right now. Craig Rounds is the man. I rented Horton Hears a Who for the kids (but we all thought it was good) and purchased Dark Knight.
While I do not think I would invest in a large library of discs at their current price level, I can honestly say that I now see why you guys were digging on HD-DVD/Blu Ray. Now that the format war is over and players can be had sub-$300, I think anyone with a nice television would be missing a lot by not buying a player and enabling Blu-Ray on their Netflix/Blockbuster account.
Also, if anyone has the final firmware for the Panny RP-91 or knows where to find it drop me a PM, it is a good player and I think the saturation issue I was having would be improved by the last firmware update.
