    Snoring help!

So, I've developed a pretty horrible snoring habit on a nightly basis. My poor wife puts up with it most nights, but sometimes has to give me the boot to the couch. I've tried the regular stuff (Breathe Right strips, throat sprays, etc.) and nothing seems to help. I have also been to a sleep study because I may have sleep apnea, but they were unable to find anything.

I've seen the commercials for "Pure Sleep," which appears to be a mouthpiece of some sort. Has anyone used it? Any other suggestions on how to help with snoring?

(Sam, I'm lookin' at you; we've all seen the video homey.)

Tell your wife to just use a pillow and all her weight if you wake up. That should take care of it! Wifey says to ask your dentist if they recommend any mouth pieces before you buy. If strips don't work, you may need to buy a more comfortable couch!

Brookstone used to sell a pillow that forced you to sleep on your side with your arm underneath the pillow. That was supposed to help with snoring. May be worth it since you can often return things months later at Brookstone if it doesn't work.

I'd steer clear of surgical answers if at all possible. I've had friends/family that have had the palate reduction surgery that's supposed to help, and it didn't.

Not to state the obvious or anything, but if you've picked up a few around the ol' spare tire area that can definitely contribute. Every time I lose weight my snoring goes waaaaaaaay down. I can snore like a mofo right now...

Matt, I don't have any good suggestions about the snoring. But maybe you should invest in some:

ie earplugs for the Mrs. A decent reusable set cost less than ten bucks. If that works for her, then I would suggest going to a ear doctor and getting a custom fitted set to really block out noise.

I've done the earplug thing since I have to sleep during the middle of the day and work was being done of the house. My earplugs are actually noise reduction plugs by eytometric research. they're designed for use at concerts and other areas where you still need to hear, but is too loud and will cause hearing loss quickly. they work good. It may take a few days getting use to having something in her ears when she sleeps.

If she's is going for that, I suggest investing in a good air mattress so when you get the boot, you can have a nicer bed in less than five minutes.

Matt, my wife put up with my snoring for the first several months of our marriage before she starting throwing fits about it. Apparently, and I've been told by several people, I'm extremely loud and might also have Sleep Apnea.

I solved this problem by doing one simple thing: Sleeping on my side. Nothing else I tried worked. I use two pillows, and kinda like Wonder said, my arm comes up underneath my pillows when I sleep. It's frustrating having to change the way you sleep after laying a certain way your whole life, but it works (at least for some).

By the way, it may be difficult forcing yourself to sleep on your side, but either trying the product Wonder mentioned, or getting used to bending your body a little so you don't easily roll over might help. The latter helped me. My wife NEVER complains anymore and I'm getting much better sleep, unless I shift onto my back in my sleep.

I hope that helps. It's certainly better to try before doing anything major.

I keep hearing more now about how weight and which way you sleep affects snoring. My father is 6'1" and about 230 and sleeps straight on his back. The man saws enough logs in the night to build all of us each a house. Somehow my mother has dealt with it.

Where as myself, don't snore at all, but I sleep on my side almost all of the time, if not, I might be on my stomach even. But it also helps I only weigh 150 pounds.

The pillow Wonder put up is something I've heard about recently, and I would def. say try the pillows, mouth pieces, whatever before really considering surgery, it costs a lot of money, and me personally, anytime I can AVOID getting put under, the better. But that's a whole other story for another day.

I snore, and ive almost got into a fight at night when my cousin's friend (that i dont like that much) woke me up in a Vegas hotel room so he can go to sleep. (He woke me up 4 times!)

Im a big fan of sleeping through the night without waking up, and that helps people who dont snore deal with the people who do snore. So if possible let your wife fall asleep first, Since im kind of overweight my problem wont really go away by sleeping on my side, even though i heard that im much quieter that way(and that works for a lot of people). Plus you get much better sleep even though sometimes it doesnt feel as comfortable as your back (which i can never do) or laying flat on your stomach (my favorite).

Laying down on your back is the worse position for snoring, your mouth opens wider, nose gets clogged, mouth gets dry and sore throats come more often.

Id try sleeping on your side before anything else, Good luck!
