I hope mine is the last one, too! Mine was born on 1/27/07!
Wow! Hopefully that means they've worked out some more of the kinks since I have a later build!

Wow. What a sad tale this is... It really makes me question the whole 5 percent failure figure MSFT throws around. I'm also on my third XBOX 360. My original one had a date of January, 2006. It started to freeze quite a bit on Chromehounds and Condemned. It wasn't anything bad, but after reading all the negative press I thought it would be best if I called them and got it replaced. They sent me a refurbished one with an April date. That one lasted me a week. It was hell. I had literally just purchased Gears of War, called one of my old college buddies over to check out the game with me. I put the game on, we go through the opening scene when Dom busts you out and the game freezes. No problem, this happens, let me just reset it, bang, the three red lights! Aaaaahhhh!
So then they send me a refurbished one with a March date, and that one has been OK so far. It pisses me off because I've had every system since PONG (since I was 5), and other than the crappy Atari controllers, I've never had a system that broke down like this. The saving grace for me has been the excellent experience I've had with Microsoft customer service line. I also did get a free game out of it for my troubles. So at least that

What's annoying is I posted over at xbox.com about the issue and I just get these retards who either say, "if you are on your 5th unit, you're doing something wrong" or "I don't believe you" or "I am on my first unit and it's working fine, something is fishy about your situation" or "You just want attention" or they try to tout the "3-5% failure rate" or something like it.
Pisses me off... they are so immature over there.

Yeah man. I dealt with the same flamers at a Gamespot.com forum for the same reasons. I wrote this long ass reply that even got me some apologies... Sorry to post it here, but I thought it would be relevant. I did have my manufacture dates wrong though, I corrected them here.
==========
"See. That's where you're wrong man. I'm extremely careful with my hardware, I even modified my entertainment center to make sure the unit was ventilated enough. I'm a gadget man and always very cautious with any piece of hardware. Especially one that I paid $400 for it. I'm not a kid either, I'm 30. Two of my friends, same problem. I'm on my third unit. But realize that Microsoft doesn't send you the same unit you sent in for repairs or a brand new unit. They send you a refurbished system, which could also explain multiple failures. I bought my new system in January of 2006. It kept freezing on me around October, enough that I wanted to send the system in. They send me a refurbished unit with a manufacture date of April. A week later I get the red lights. Send it in again, got another one with a manufacture date of March, and so far so good. I've had pretty much every system since the Atari days, and it was the first time I had problems of this nature (although I know quite a few people had horror stories with other systems as well).
All I'm saying is that just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean that everyone else is an idiot. Do you think it's just coincidence that Microsoft extended the warranty from 3 to 12 months? Do you think Microsoft doesn't recognize there's a problem when they so quickly will repair untis without asking too many questions? If they really thought that the problem was user based versus hardware our lives in the customer service lines would be much harder. If your XBOX 360 is within warranty, call them and tell them you have the red lights. They will pretty much ask you to check the wires and take the hard drive out. If that doesn't help (as if), they will give you a ticket number and send you a "coffin" box. If the failure rate was so low, and they were really that confident in the hardware, trust me, they wouldn't be so quick to call the machine DOA and send you a new one. They would also ask you more questions to ensure you didn't do something stupid. They know there's a problem, and that's why they are quick to remedy the problem.
Despite all this, mostly due to how responsive their customer service has been, I'm still very happy with my machine and the overall experience. But it does make me mad to think about it, especially if I had to pay for repairs (thank god for warranties). If your machine is under one year old, I would reccomend getting the extended warranty, because you don't want to be one of the idiots."

Yeah Atom, it has been a tough one for sure and I hope they have most of the bugs worked out. I am thankful that MS has been good about replacements (unlike a couple of stories I've heard about Sony - but can't confirm).
It is sad that there have been so many that have failed. Jon is on his 7th I think and I hope for him that this one lasts. It really sucks to have this many fail and for the same person even!
What is even worse are the responses on most forums. Granted one of the thoughts could be location or how an item is treated, but to be so callous and disrespectful is simply uncalled for. Someone here I think called it when they said most of the people who are acting that way probably didn't buy the item with their own cash.

For sure. Or even people who only had the system for a few months... If they indeed release a box with 60 nm processors that is quieter and cooler running I may take the plunge and sell my existing one.

So far, no failures for 12/2005 boxes. Well, except for Aether, but he doesn't count.
