Testing the MS Game Disc Replacement Program

A few of you are aware of my cracked Gears of War disc. A week or two ago I played GOW for the first time in a long time. I tried to jump into a game with a few PGL'ers but they had maps that I hadn't yet bought so instead I started up my SP campaign on insane. Serren jumped in and we had a blast. I had forgotten how insanely pretty this game is.

At the end of the night I vow to play more if only to get through the campaign on insane. As I pop the disc out and grab it from the middle hole and the edge my finger catches something sharp. I look closely at the disc and notice that the inner ring is cracked and some of the plastic is missing.

(click on the photo for full size)

I immediately start wondering where the missing pieces are and fearing that they are inside my 360. To this day I haven't found them. They weren't in the box and so far if they are in the 360 they haven't caused any damage.

I wasn't quite sure what to do and then I remembered this post here at PGL and the MS replacement program for MS titles. Awesome! I filled out the simple form, put my disc in a paper sleeve and am sending it out today. I figure for $20 its a good way to get the game replaced.

The form requires you to put your console SN on the form so make sure you can access the back of your console if you need a game replaced.

I'll report back when I get any word and/or a replacement so you all know what you can expect if you try to take advantage of the offer in this program.

That actually looks like a break you would get by pulling the disc out of the case to sharply. Hope you get it replaced.

That's what it looks like, but I'm not a n00b when it comes to removing CDs, DVDs and games from cases. If it happened when I removed it, I didn't notice it until I took the game out of the console and the missing pieces were not in the case. The whole thing is very strange. I would have had to pull it out without pressing the button at all to exert that kind of force. Very freaky. I hope they replace it as well. Its playable, but I'm too scared to stick it in my 360.

The same exact thing happened to my Madden 06 game. In my case it did happen when I removed it from the game case. It was the type with the square piece that holds the disc in place and it was very tight. I pay an extra $3.00 for all my 360 games at Game Stop for the game play guarantee. It covers the game for life. Since the launch of the 360 I've exchanged 3 games for new ones because of scratches or cracks. Not very many but I’m still ahead of the game because that would have been $180.00 in replacement costs.

Today, in a nondescript envelope I received the following:

My GOW replacement disc! Yay! Within two weeks of sending the broken disc into MS I received my replacement. For $20, that's an awesome deal and pretty quick response.

I'm back in action now!

I was reading that gameplay disc thing over at EBGames and it says it covers it only for a year. It also does not cover it from chips coming off of the disc.

Huh? That's random and probably wrong.

1. They did not ask for any "proof of purchase" only my credit card number so that they could bill me $20.

2. There were clearly chips out of the middle of my disc.

I'm gonna have to call BS on EB's "explanation" and chalk it up to EB simply wanting people not to send their disc into MS, but instead buy a new (or rather used) replacement game from them.

Ahh I was talking about the one that EB Game hosts. It outlines that EB Games will only give a new disc out so long as it is only unreadable, and not in pieces.

Awesome Peench.

I love EB. Whenever I go there, they would always say it would be covered no matter what. They're an unreadable disc.

Ah - gotcha Gordon. So looks like MS has a better replacement policy. That being said, the EB replacement is only a few bucks on top of the purchase right? Not $20?
