Is Microsoft fixing the 360?

We all fear the day that the dreaded 3 LoD will show up on our own beloved 360. We all know somebody with a Xbox 360 that suffered the blinking red lights of death. Although Microsoft never officially acknowledged the hardware problems there is clearly a problem with 360s dying. And as of today, it seems Microsoft is secretly working on a fix.

Today Logic Sunrise received a email from their contact close to Microsoft with some spicy new details about a new Xbox 360 cooling setup. Supposedly Microsoft added a secondary heatsink, next to the DVD-drive, that’s connected to the GPU’s heatsink. This way they are sure to spread the heat more and try to prevent the 360’s from overheating and causing the 3 LoD.

These photos seem very plausible as it would be a logical step by Microsoft to fix the dreaded 3 LoD problem that already put so many 360’s to the Microsoft Repair Centre. So if Microsoft says there isn’t a problem with the hardware design of the Xbox 360 why are they adding another heatsink? This surely isn’t the last we’ve heard about this rumor or the 3 LoD issue itself and we’ll keep you up to date accordingly.

Never had flashing red-lights. Always other things.

Honestly, I don't think simply adding another heatsink will be sufficient. I think they just need to use better quality parts.

When I was at the summit I talked with a guy that does software testing for the 360s. He told me there are literally hundreds of combinations of different parts in the 360's out there today. This is probably just another design and who knows why it was changed. It could be to further dissipate heat or could be to lower costs. I dunno. I do wish that there wasn't that lingering fear in the back of my mind when I play my 360 that it will die. If adding a heat sink or moving stuff around solves the problem, that's great!

Well as some Engineer from Microsoft told me, Never Buy systems at launch, Cause they Rush everything for launch. like when Soldering the parts together then Things could start falling apart, and the Placement of internal parts could be Screwy and sketch.

He told me this before i bought my 360, I guess he was right on Target with that comment.

I think they should just remove the flashing red lights. That should solve the problem of the consoles dying.

Well, I hope whatever new design features they are playing with that they use them on mine. My 360 was mailed to the center today. I got service repaire scheduled last week on Tues. They didn't mail the box until Friday. I got it today packed it up and dropped it off at the UPS today. So 3 days to get there puts it on Monday. 5 days to repaire replace puts it at Fri. 3 days to ship back I should have it worse case two weeks from today... Best case next friday.

It saddens me as an ex-MS employee that this is happening. It is amazing that my OG xbox is still going strong with no problems and I bought it launch month. I hope MS figures out how to handle this or no one is going to buy the 720.

Ya, but launch was over a year ago- new ones are still dying along w/the 'elite'.

OH NO it takes 5 days to get them fixed, I thought it was 2, BUMMER. For awhile they said on the MS site 2 days to repair yours or replace it with new unit, but that has been removed. They got mine yesterday about 1:30, not that I'm checking. Do they let you know when it's repaired & they ship it back?
