Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Wheeling, WV Age: 37 | I Think My 360 is Dying Anyone have any experience with getting their 360 replaced by MS without having the three rings of death? Mine has been exhibiting progressively worse problems since the fall update. It is sometimes having problems reading disks (if I eject the disk and reinsert it, it has always been able to read it fine the second time). It has locked up maybe a half dozen times in games. A few weeks ago (after the latest update), when it rebooted, it went to an error screen with one red light. I also received the one red light once over the weekend. The console also seems to be slower then it used to be -- it takes a couple of minutes to boot into the blades when turning it on, another two or three minutes to log me into Xbox Live, and it just doesn't seem to be as responsive (the responsiveness is fine within games).
I'm wondering if one of the updates somehow corrupted some of the system files since it seems to be acting similar to a PC that has corrupted system files.

| Problems with your system don't always resort to 3 red rings. It's definitely a defect in the unit itself if it doesn't read the disks properly. If you do bring it up to Xbox Customer Support, definitely mention that, that'll almost be a sure fire rapair/exchange for you. I think especially if you can reproduce that same problem with the disk errors while on the phone with them. | |

Jon, the main reason that I haven't called them yet is that I haven't been able to reproduce the problem with reading disks (one day it won't read one, then it will be fine for a few days, then it won't read a different disk -- no rhyme or reason). I think I will give them a buzz this week; I don't want it to die before I get too far into Battlestations Midway.

If your 360 is starting to act funny, it's probably a sign of things to come. Don't waist anytime and send it back to MS. The sooner you send it to them, the sooner you get it back.

Anyway, you don't have anything to lose by calling them, so I'd say go for it.

Just explain to MS what's happening and that it's not acting like it should and it's becoming unplayable. Hopefully they won't ask you to live with it.

I agree -- it really is acting like corrupt/damaged system files on a PC. According to MS' support site, the one red light I saw means failing hardware; maybe it is the HDD.

As to MS owing us (I couldn't tell if your comment was sarcastic or not), the only thing that they owe us is working consoles. I think they're making up for their poor launch by extending the warranty. It's not a big deal for me if this is the only one that dies; however, when we have folks like Jon here in our community that have gone through multiple consoles (as well as other folks who have had 2 or 3), that's a problem.
I remember several of us had a somewhat heated debate last Dec/Jan about acceptable failure rate; at the time a few folks were adamant that the 360 failure rate was acceptable. I still think that when you market a console as as the digital hub for your entertainment center, it becomes a piece of consumer electronics instead of a toy. There is much less consumer tolerance for consumer electronics failing at high rates than there is for toys failing. I don't think that MS fully understood this aspect of the nature of consumer electronics when they made certain decisions regarding the launch of the 360 (i.e. going with cheaper chip/component makers to drive down costs, low QC, etc). I'm not sure what this means for MS in this industry over the big picture; however, after watching consoles die for several folks here as well as friends and now watching my own start the steady decline, I know that I have a lower opinion of MS as a company than I did before Dec 2005. I love my 360, but a $600 product (when you add in the HD-DVD drive) shouldn't be kicking the bucket as frequently as the 360s seem to do.

The "lecture" was just me venting steam towards MS (lot of good that will do). I agree that it's probably the HDD; I just don't feel comfortable doing the buy and swap because it's not the fault of Target, Walmart, or whatever other merchant who takes a hit on something like that if I swap and return.
