360 HDMI question

I just picked up an Xbox 360 Arcade because my other 360 is going out for repair. This new 360 has HDMI. My question is am I getting 5.1 sound using the HDMI cable? I use an optical cable with my other 360.

Thanks.

I get 5.1 through my HDMI cable. Make sure you have it set up in your settings though.

Good question. I'd like to know also.

From what I understand, you should. Problem for me is my receiver does not have HDMI. I ran the HDMI to my TV and optical from my TV to the receiver. I get sound, but my receiver does not give me the 5.1 or dolby digital icons unless I run the optical straight from the 360 to the receiver.

A lot of TV sets only output stereo even though they use the optical output. They wont pass 5.1 on to the next component.

if your receiver has HDMI input, you're set. otherwise you will need the optical connection.
