Cause - how long have you had this 360 for? I had a similar problem with one, the loud noise issue. Also, did you give them your name and all that when you called about your problem. If not, i'd think about callin them, tellin them you got the RRoD, then send it in, they'll get it and it'll work but they might fix the fan for you. If they don't, when you get it back call them and complain that now your 360 is making a terrible loud noise and it didn't do that before you sent it in to them. Then maybe they'll fix the fan for free lol.
Towel Trick - this is the first i've heard of this red ringing a box. I first heard of the towel trick because it was used to un-red-ring your box. I can confirm it works, 3 friends of mine had RRoD, and used the towel trick and the 360 came back to life, albeit, not for much longer.
