Cannot get Wii to connect to my wireless network

I have tried everything. I first tried to do a automatic setup but after several attemps found that this was not working and decided to do it manually. Well, after about 2 hrs of working on this that did not work either. I keep getting an error message #51330. If I turn on my broadcast SSID on my router I can see my network and connect but with it off I have no luck. There is alot of wireless networks in my area and I would prefer not to broadcast this info. Any help on this info would be greatly appreciated.

Issue solved. After doing some research I found that for some reason the Wii has issues trying to connect to just a wireless G network. I changed my router to mixed for B and G and now all is fine.

Cool! Not much online, but the system updates cant hurt. You can also set your Mii's to mingle! The new News tab is neat also. The Google world view is a nice touch to find where the news is happeining. Unless you live in Africa. Nothing seems to happen there...

I know you fixed the problem but just a question, why not broadcast the SSID but just use WEP for security?

I think the common belief is that you are less likely to being hacked if the hackers have to look harder to find your network. There are those that can hack WEP quite easily (search google). But if they have to find your network name first, that is another step between the hackers and you.

Just make sure you change the name from the default. If I was a hacker, even with the SSID off, searching for networks called Belkin, Linksys, Dlink would be the first step in finding your "hidden" network.

Good tip on the "name change", Serren. I'm still named 'linksys'. I'll have to change it sometime soon.

yes I have my SSID changed from the default. I am very cautious when it comes to security.

I am just the opposite! I know how to be safe, I just don't have anything to hide or protect really so I hardly bother.

I'm an old hacker at heart, so I tend to keep up on this stuff. alt.2600!!!!!

The scary thing is that if a "real" hacker wants in, you are screwed. Thank goodness these guys and gals have bigger targets then us!

Not broadcasting an SSID is only going to stop someone who's using Windows built wifi protocols from finding your network - ie A total noob! I personally use NetStumbler among others. Once you have captured a few packets with Ethereal, you should have enough info on WEP, as well as a(n) MAC addy to use to bypass their filtering. Think I've said too much...

Yeah, they're always going to be ways around it but, I know a lot of people around my complex aren't smart enough to do that, so simply not broadcasting will help with that quite a bit.

It's surprising how many people don't even have any sort of security AND they are broadcasting...

The funny thing is Vista shows even the "hidden" ones now. Wireless security sucks there are ways around a majority of the standard security stuff. WEP is the worse and there is no reason to run it unless you are connecting something real old. Even the Tivo's are now updated so they don't use WEP anymore. That’s why the best way to implement wireless is to put it in a DMZ then they need to VPN in from there.

I broadcast my SSID and have no security enabled on my network. I don't have my computers on very often at home so for me I don't really care. The people who are going to do the most damage would be able to get in anyway.

Woundup, what is your router model/ISP?

If you have the Netgear model CG814WG from Time Warner or Comcast, check this thread.

It didn't work for Sarah, but it might for some of you if you cannot connect. Apparently there is a built in firewall that blocks something the Wii needs.
