Resident Evil Wii details...

A plethora of new details have surfaced for Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles for the Wii.

As the title indicates, the game revolves around tying together the story of the Umbrella Corporation. Gameplay wise, it will NOT be light gun style, instead using a setup similar to Resident Evil 4. The B trigger will be used to engage over-the-shoulder view, with the Wiimote to aim and A to fire. Other details are listed below.


-The game consists of 4 chapters: RE1's mansion, RE2's RPD, RE3's city areas and RE4's village and surrounding locations.
-Each chapter has 2 selectable characters. RE1 includes Jill and Chris, RE2 has Leon and Claire, RE3 has Jill and Carlos, while RE4 has Leon and Ada.
-There are several characters that can be unlocked by playing through the game, including Rebecca Chambers, Hunk, and Albert Wesker.
-The game features Quick Time Events ala RE4, but rather than pushing buttons they require motioning with the Wiimote.
-All characters will have melee attacks, just like RE4.
-To encourage replayablility, each character has strengths and weaknesses, with variations in health, speed, and other factors.
-New content will be added to the individual chapters, with a primary aim to include more of an Umbrella connection to the RE4 story.
-Ammo conservation will play a part in the gameplay, harkening back to the pre-RE4 games.
-Each character will have a unique set of weapons, and may hold a maximum of 2 weapons at any one time. Chris, for example, gets a pistol and shotgun whilst Jill gets a pistol and grenade launcher.
-Each stage will feature new weapons such as Richard's shotgun (RE1), the Desert Eagle (RE2), and the Chicago Typewriter and Krauser's anti-personnel robots (both RE4).
-After each chapter your data can be saved, unlocking these new weapons for Arcade Mode.
-Arcade Mode will be based on the Mercenaries minigame, where you pick a character and stage and blast your way through it.
-Scenario mode will feature a large number of in-game cutscenes.

I'm super excited about this. I know RE5 is coming to 360 and PS3, but the fact that RE4 rocked the GameCube gives me high hopes on this one. I can't wait.

That actually sounds like it will be pretty cool. RE4 is one of my favorite games last gen. Very impressive looking, one of the best looking games last gen. ( and it isn't even 480p)

Actually, the GC of RE4 does support 480p. I waited to play through it until I got my component cables. You have to hold down the B button when starting up games that support 480p and it will ask if you would like to use 480p.

But, the game was matted widescreen, so there was no way to get rid of those without sacrificing resolution (zooming in using your TV).

What I meant is that while the Gamecube is putting out a 480p signal the games really isn't 480p as it has black bars (above and below) like you described. I imagine this was done to keep the rock solid framerate, very impressive considering how many freaks appear on screen at one time and all animated exceptionally well.

I cant wait for Resident Evil 5 for the 360. Unfortunatley I never got to play 4cause I had already sold my gamecube off by the time it came out. I heard it was awesome though.

I think the game (once the B button trick is used) IS a 480p signal, but there are still bars on the game as thet is the way they designed it. The resolution and the aspect ratio have nothing to do with each other in this instance.

Yup. Also, changing it to 480p form 480i doesn't change the aspect ratio either. I can only think of one game off hand where changing the resolution affects what the developer will let you play with and that is Soul Calibur II on the xbox. Switching it to 720p only allows for 4:3 while 480p gives you the choice for both 4:3 and 16:9. Most likely to keep the framerate stable.

I mean exactly what I said, the game isn't displaying that many lines of data. Unless you are counting the black bars as lines of graphical data. It is displaying less data than pretty much every other gamecube game.

Basically Anamoprhic versus Letterbox, Anamorphic is pushing out more data (more resolution than letterbox). If the game was anamorphic widescreen it would not have those black bars (unless playing a 4:3 where all 16:9 content has black bars). This of course assuming the aspect ratio is 16:9, it may be some other wide screen ratio but using 16:9 for explanation purposes.

I wasn't pointing it out as bash, I was giving the game praise as it is one of the best looking games last gen despite lower res than most. Heck, the PS2 version is anamorphic and doesn't look as good so resolution clearly isn't everything. Anyways, I'm still impressed when I play it, a true classic IMO...... but yes old news. I can't wait to see what they can do with the Wii RE game.
