Nyko BluWave IR Remote for PS3

Nyko BluWave IR Remote for PS3
By: Peench

If you have a PS3, there’s a high degree of likelihood that you also have some form of Home Theater to go with it. Being able to enjoy BluRay movies in 1080i or 1080p is probably one of the biggest benefits to having a Sony PS3. If you have a home theater system comprised of multiple components, you also have some sort of all-in-one remote to control it all. And if you don't, you should buy one right now.

Aside from it's current inability to upscale 1080i sources, one of the biggest drawbacks to the Sony PS3’s use of Bluetooth technology is the inability to program your remote to control your PS3. Sure it creates a need to buy some sort of remote solution for using your PS3 as a BluRay player, but Sony is in it to make money and sale of accessories is another way for them to do so. Thankfully the Nyko Bluewave IR Remote will solve some of these problems for you.

In the package is the remote, two batteries and the USB IR controller. The USB IR controller is about the size of a AAA battery and is barely noticeable once plugged into the PS3.

The controller itself is a nice size and weight, easily fitting into the palm of your hand. All of the necessary buttons to control your PS3 are available on the remote. There are no drivers to install and nothing to configure. By simply plugging in the USB IR controller you will be up and ready to run.

I plugged in the USB IR controller into the PS3 with the PS3 off. I turned it on and was able to instantly control the PS3. While the Nyko BluWave is not a perfect replacement for controlling the PS3 (because it is missing an on/off button), it is a great solution for controlling your PS3 while watching BluRay movies. If you are using the BluWave to control the PS3 there are only two drawbacks: (1) The controller does not light up, and (2) there is no power or PS button. You will, therefore, still need to turn on and off your PS3 manually. Given that you will be inserting a BluRay movie anyway, this shouldn’t be a problem.

One of the biggest benefits to the Nyko BluWave remote, however, is the fact that you can use it to program your existing all-in-one remote to control your PS3 while watching movies. If your all-in-one lights up, this solves the majority of the limitations with the BluWave remote. I was easily able to use the BluWave remote to program my Harmony remote and now use my Harmony to control my PS3 while watching movies. The Nyko BluWave Remote is currently priced at $15.99 at Amazon, and at this price, it is a perfect solution for integration with your existing HT setup!

Don't you mean Peenchie? Reminds me of E3 a couple of years ago when Serren and I were hanging out with a few of the girls from the PMS clan. One of them was Peach and apparently that made us long, lost relatives! Good times!

It would be nice if Sony had put a USB port on the back of the PS3. I have no desire to have the USB adapter hanging off the front of my PS3.

Soffy - You can buy them pretty much anywhere Nyko products are sold. You can also buy them Directly From Nyko.

Worm - yeah, I hear you on that one. I'd much rather it be in the back, but since its IR, it needs some receiver eye in the front of the console. All in all it really doesn't stand out when it is connected. But I'd much rather not have a random thing sticking out of the front of my console.

I was wrong about the USB adapter. Amazon had this for only $14.99 so I figured I would try it out since I had several Amazon reward certificates to use. I ordered one two days ago and it showed up yesterday. While I do prefer not to have anything connected in the front, the IR USB adapter is small. It is also black so from a distance it blends into the profile of my PS3 so you can barely see it's there. It does work very well. Of course you can't turn the PS3 on with the remote, but it would have been nice if you could at least turn the PS3 off. With the Bluetooth remote you can just hold down the PS symbol to shut the box off.
I still need to program my Harmony remote for use with this.
Overall I am very pleased with the remote. It was worth $15 since now I should be able to use my Harmony remote to control the PS3 for my BD watching.

Worm - very cool! My photos didn't really do it justice, but you are correct. It is very small and does blend in. You can't even see it from a distance - or from even closer up really. I agree about the turning on and off, but for most things it is nice not to have 2 remotes.
