Those rat bastards make it so hard for the independent stores. I know people that have worked for that company. They are, indeed, rat bastards.

Get those creative juices flowing and come up with a snappy tie in for your release.

Feel free to throw some ideas this way. These are the parameters: Can't cost us anything. We don't have any money. Case in point, our rent is $4625.00 a month and today we have sold 1 DVD, 1 Xbox game and 3 GBA games.

We have a really hard time with customers over here. We had great, loyal customers when we were in the hood, but here in the nice neighborhood there is no loyalty at all. That, and most of the people that Sam and I know don't support us. The lion's share of our friends are lame, apparently, heh. We literally know close to 200 people locally between the two of us and about 10 of them give us occasional business. It doesn't even matter that our trade-ins and selling prices are better than the other local stores.

I feel for ya, Geoff. Just today I bought Y - The Last Man at a local comic book store. I loved it and nearly picked up the second volume on the way home from Barne's and Noble. But I held off to go back tomorrow during the day and buy from the same local store. It's an Austin thing, buying local.

My personal consumer mantra is:

Buy local. Buy fresh. Buy authentic.

damn, that blows Geoff. Since I have little extra money, it's easier for me to price match and go to the BB; no shipping.

I know it would be a no-no, but the best way to get those customers would be the break the street date. Other than that, knock off a few bucks.

I hear you on the shipping, but when doing that remember to calculate shipping vs. sales tax. Then it just comes down to whether or not you can wait the extra days to get it.

Yeah... about street dates... we don't even break street for ourselves. Not that we have much opportunity to. You see, that is the other way that GameStop is sticking it to the little guy. They have deals with different companies that allow them to have games on the shipping date, which is what most people think of as the release date. For instance, the shipping date is Tuesday for most games. GameStop has them on the shelves by Tuesday, or Wednesday at the latest. For independant stores, our distributor gets them on Tuesday and ships them to us either Tuesday or Wednesday. That means we get them on Friday and, because of the low margin on games, if we were to pay to have them overnighted to us, we would lose money.

That is not a very good situation to be in, especially for games that don't sell. With normal shipping, we pay $54 for 360 titles that sell for $60. If the game doesn't sell before it drops to $29.99, then we already eat the $24 loss. We can't really afford to not make money on anything, because we rely on the $6 profit on games that do sell to cover the losses on the ones that don't. It is not as big of a problem with 360 games, but damn does the PS3 kick us in the nuts. I hope those games start selling. We didn't sell a single copy of NCAA 08, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Def Jam, Double Agent or FEAR on PS3. Sucks big time.

There you go, folks! Remember to support independent businesses, we deeply appreciate it! Remember to give GetYourGamez some love also, because they have to deal with this same nonsense. And because we like them.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, MadBryan!

No worries, I never detected any disrespect! We could sincerely use the fresh ideas though. Nothing that we have tried at this location has worked, so new eyes on the problem would definitely help. Anything you guys could throw out for us would be great! If everyone could pimp the store out to their friends or add our link/logo to their email signature, that would help us out too. We need all the help we can get!

I hear you Geoff on the cost. I didn't realize you guys were paying that much on games. That totally blows. Obviously I've never worked in retail, but I don't see how you guys make money with only a 10% markup that's suppose to cover labor and various other fixed and variable cost. I know Goodguys for speakers did a 100% markup; I got speakers at cost from a buddy using his employee discount, and they got stuff at cost.

I try to support locals all the time, especially music. I buy a lot of used games, music and movies. I only purchase about six new games a year, and get at least that in used. I will get a game new if it is as used prices, $20 to $30.

The sales tax in my area is $.07375 or $4.42 based on a $59.99 game.

As good street dates, I used to love to pre-order Dreamcast games from Sega directly. They shipped all the games on the same no matter the destination. Since I only live about forty minutes from Sega of America (San Francisco), I would get games three days before the street date. I was totally stoked on Crazy Taxi when it arrived, LOL.

Sweet deal with Sega! I would love it if we could order directly from publishers.

On a side note: I don't mean to alarm you, but some other rat bastard put "Our Lips Are Sealed" on your Zune and played it so that it would show up on your card... you definitely need to do something about that!
