Michael Bay: 'Blu-ray is where my money is'

Due to a recent exclusivity deal, Dreamworks' Transformers became an HD DVD exclusive. Michael Bay became pretty distressed at the deal, and threatened to leave production of Transformers 2.

The recent release of the HD DVD has been the best debut HD disc so far -- a significant victory for those in the HD DVD camp. However, that hasn't stopped the outspoken director from declaring Blu-ray as the ultimate victor. "It's short-sighted and it has delayed consumers' moving to HD (home video)," he told USA Today. "As a director, my critical eye is that Blu-ray is where my money is. Consumers are smart, and they are going to wait it out."

The exclusivity arrangement for Dreamworks' catalog expires in less than two years.

Having Michael Bay endorsing your disc medium should be seen as a liability.

Having two standards is what is short sighted and what is preventing people from moving to a new HD format. Rather than pissing and moaning and trying to make the division larger, why not do something like support both formats or something?!? Lame.

Jon Liu is on a distinguished road

I don't think he had a choice in supporting both. He ultimately supported Blu-ray, but Paramount's decision and hand-holding has made him support HD-DVD as well.

No more a liability than a money maker. Good ol Joe Six Pack thinks his movies are awesome. The dude sure can direct action sequences better than anyone I've seen. I watch his movies because they are fun and an escape from reality. In reality, aren't movies supposed to do that? I don't know, ask David Lynch. His movies are certainly an escape from reality, but they are far from fun to watch.

In the end, I think Paramount's decision to go neutral was stupid on their part, not to mention it confuses the hell out of people. In a perfect world, every studio would be neutral, and the deciding factor on who wins the format war would be the consumer. I support both, but I lean slightly more towards Bluray because they have more movies that I enjoy. HDDVD playback issues are a thing of the past thanks to my 360 add-on. Take that to the bank, MadBryan.
