We're not quite sure what's going on with Sony's latest firmware updates, as they've been riddled with issues preventing the use of certain features after their installation. Last week, firmware 1.92 created internet problems for those who installed it. Online games wouldn't function properly, and browsing the web had its own problems. Sony was quick to work on this, and thus we have firmware 1.93 now. Firmware 1.93 fixes the problems of 1.92, but not without containing some preliminary issues of its own.
If you are having a hard time downloading FW 1.93, having it lock up and timing out on you at 4%, or refusing to start altogether, there are a few things you can do. You can try restarting the download a few times, and it continues to fail, then you can move on to turning off the PS3, and powering it down completely by using the power switch behind the console. Let the console sit for a minute and try it again.
Lastly, if that doesn't work, do what worked for me: after the download fails again, return to the cross media bar, remove the ethernet cable/disable your wireless router, and wait until the PS3 realizes that you've disabled the internet. Power down the console, and then shut it off using the switch on the back. Wait one minute, and power the console back up completely. Enable internet activity again, and allow the PS3 to connect. Then give the download another shot.
