They love saying things, and Don Eklund, executive vice president of advanced technologies for Sony Pictures, is no exception. On the topic of movies, Eklund claims that no one wants to download them from the World Wide Web and that "Blu-ray has a good 8 to 10 years before the Internet catches up". That is a lot of years. Of course, hyper-billionaire Bill Gates is famously known for saying that "No one will need more than 637K of memory for a personal computer", so who knows what exactly the future of computers or data transfer speeds will be.
When asked by Pocket-lint about Blu-ray consumers who want to watch HD-DVD exclusive titles, Rich Marty, vice president of new business development, answers briefly "buy it on DVD" and let the upscaling of the Blu-ray player handle the work. Good advice for anyone looking to watch Paramount films in the future.
Marty also praises the consumers and feels that they are "smart enough to realise the benefits and pay the extra accordingly" for Blu-ray over HD-DVD. Oh, and by the way, did you know that PS3s can play Blu-ray discs? Not many do, it seems. link

There was something funky going on with the colors though that I couldn't quite place my finger on. I had never seen the movie before though so perhaps that was part of the film?
Also, will this address Mits owners who get screwed with 480p, or will it upscale it to 1080i so it can be watched in at least 1080i?

Now on to the real world. I have been using the Netflix download service and I have to say I'm pretty impressed. They have run very smoothly. Granted I'm not watching them in HD or suround sound since I'm watching them on a PC but not bad never the less. I still believe that even though I'll be buying both disks for awhile, download will win in the end. Talking to my co-workers from the other side of the water 100mb to the home is a relality now in Finland at least. As I stated before 5 years or less before download wins. If we where smart I few of us would start working on a Tivo type device with a HD movie download service....

If you play a 720p game on a set that doesn't accept 720p (older mits for example), the PS3 had donrezzed it to 480p. Dmiller, I think your set is 720p native so it doesn't affect you. I don't think it has been fixed yet.
That being said, I'm not positive that it affects upscaling DVD's - only games. I'm not sure though.

Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Missouri City, TX Age: 39 | I'm not sure I'm understanding all of this. I have a Mits that only accepts 1080i, thus all non-1080i compatible games (pretty much all of them it seems...except Ninja Gaiden Sigma) are downconverted to 480p, making them look awful.
I have also not been able to get the PS3 to upconvert SD DVD's to 1080i. The settings for upscaling DVD's are for an HDMI interface, which my set does not support (using component). So, unless I'm missing something, it will NOT upconvert SD DVD's to 1080i via component. Correct?
For my HT environment, the PS3 is a decent BD player that kinda-sorta plays games...whee! Hope they fix the 1080i issue SOON!!!

| | Banned | So what happens when this comes to the market? 3.9 terabytes!
Then add this to it!! 50 terabytes!!!
I think what Gates meant to say was that personal computers will have endless memory!
