No Gamerscores for PS3

Bragging score akin to Xbox 360's Gamerscore and Achievements won't appear on the PlayStation 3.

One way to tell if someone has been logging some serious hours on their Xbox 360 is to check their Gamerscore. The feature tracks how many Achievements--various game goals set by developers--gamers accomplish by assigning each task a numerical score. By adding up all the numbers, gamers get their Gamerscore and bragging rights (provided they didn't buy it).

The feature has been a surprise success for the Xbox 360, with gamers playing games they otherwise wouldn't solely to try and boost their scores.

With its success, many thought Sony would mimic the system for its upcoming PlayStation 3. It was even once rumored that Sony's system would be called "Entitlements," causing a bit of a row among Microsoft fans.

Now it appears that Sony isn't jumping on the bandwagon. According to Wired.com, Jack Tretton, executive vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment America, has said that achievements, entitlements, or whatever else they may be called, will not be a part of the PS3's program.

When asked about the prospect, Tretton said, "We didn't mention that, but it is our intention that we would have it--although I think it would be game-centric. It's very difficult to draw analogies [between] your success on SOCOM and your success on Madden. Madden players care about peoples' success on Madden."

So instead of having one score across all games, it appears Sony is opting for glorified leaderboards for each game.

"So the publisher [of each game] will have the flexibility to have a robust ranking system, on a game-by-game basis," said Tretton. "The intention right now is not to have something that is pan-platform. We do intend to do that with our [first-party] stuff."

Tretton also admitted that the ranking system would not be included in the launch games. Sony had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

I like the feature because it can also be used to hold reviewers accountable.

If someone tells me that Perfect Dark is 9.0 worthy, but hasn't even beaten the game...I can discount that review.

Well, I like Gamerscore because of the fact that it adds another level of enjoyment or accomplishment to the games.

I am so spoiled by gamerscores/achievements that I cant imagine not having the feature. Its one of those things that I take for granted.

even though people can now buy them and some of the early ones look like they were too easy to achieve, it is strangely satisfying when that little message pops up 'Achievement Unlocked', it is kinda like gamer crack.

seriously, Spoon, it is something I think I take for granted.

I ALWAYS press the xbox guide button whenever that "Achievement Unlocked" notification comes up!

Yup... I love the sound of it too! Even though it is the generic pop-up sound, it just sounds a little better when it is an achievement.

That is a good point about how somebody in Madden doesn't care how somebody does in SOCOM... however, that's what leaderboards are for, and points are for the big picture.

its striking how such a small and improbable item as gamerscore has attracted me to comparisons and desired achievements with friends. at work i often will look at xbox.com to see who is on and compare scores in individual games. Not that i was planning on buying a ps3 anyway but this little lack continues to point out how poorly sony is doing in this round.

yeah, I never thought I'd that the gamerscores would be something I would care about so much until now. There's just so much to it that I couldn't imagine going without.

Especially when it's linked directly to what people see online. You could say "dude that guy owns, he played Call of Duty 2 on Veteran all the way through!"

or

"Dude, that guy's got like no life. He must be a geek playing with like 50,000 gamer points!"

It's fun either way.
