According to the report, the controller will have to be paired to the console via the USB cable before play. This pairing process will be required each time the console has been shut down and turned back on, or - given the rough translation - possibly every time the controller has lost power.
It's unlikely that putting the console into standby mode will cause a reconnection requirement, if it's console-related. It's also unlikely that many of those lucky (?) enough to get a launch PS3 are going to want to leave it on, even powered-down, 24/7.
Those wondering about battery life will be happy to note the controller is expected to get about 30 hours of playtime out of one 2.5 hour charge. As the battery isn't replaceable, when it's no longer recharging the controller needs to be replaced or sent for repairs. | Source

Theres no way they would do this. LOL @ Jon, he's taking the safe route.

| seriously! I just don't want to think that this is possible! I mean... with Apple and the infamous iPod, you have the option of sending it back to them to have them replace the battery.
They're not even rumoring that as an option!
I, along with everyone else who reads this, truly hope that this is NOT the case though!

[Edit - since posting this, impress has corrected the original article. It seems that pairing isn't required, that was a "feature" of the early revisions of the console. It may still be required for the initial connection, for Bluetooth's authentication process, but that would likely be it. The controllers? Those are still disposable.]

| probably have to pay for shipping or something like it... either way that means you would probably be out of a controller for AT LEAST a few days. | |

| I can see that Sony would keep their end of the bargain up for a while but, there's not really anyway of tracking or whatever if the battery is truly "dead" or not. People can just turn it in to get a "new one" or something like that. It would be like a permanent warranty on your controller, which is a nice thought. | |
