Goodbye, Emotion Engine, you were quite useful

SCEA's Kimberly Otzman went on record earlier today, stating "The current 60 GB model utilizes a hardware and solution for backwards compatibility, namely the Emotion Engine chip. The new 80 GB PS3 will use a software solution for backwards compatibility, similar to that currently found in the PAL model." So there you have it. The Emotion Engine chip will be phased out around August, with the release of the new model.link

Much the same way the 360 does it and people have been unhappy about certain games not being compatible. Who cares about PS1 games but they better hope most PS2 games play.

Well, glad I got mine when I did (20GB model). I've been playing the original Resident Evil games lately as well as some other PS1 and PS2 games. I need to pick up some of the old Ratchet and Clank games.

I love me some Ratchet and Clank! Even if MGS4 does end up on 360, I'll pick up a PS3 for Ratchet:Future alone.

I just hope my OG MGS and the VS missions will work. Aside from those, I can go without most PSX games.
