Composite cables with PS3
Well the rumors turned out to be true. Sony Japan confirmed that both versions are coming with Composite cables only. I know, some will say most people will already have component or HDMI cables laying around. Millions of people will still get home with their new toy and find they cant even get 480p with whats bundled
Nothing has been confirmed for the U.S. versions but everything points to it staying identical.

Thats funny, because Gamestop said it comes with HDMI-componant, and you could buy the HDMI-HDMI soon after.

Yeah I've got componant and HDMI cables laying around, but not what would plug into a PS3. Is the PS3 getting away from having special cables? Surely not

I don't think that they can push a 600 dollar price point for a Blu-Ray Player that also plays video games and not include cables needed to play those at full resolution out of the box..
At least, I hope they can't...

According to an Engadget article on 9/25/06, Sony has already announced that the PS3 will not come with an HDMI cable and they are leaning away from including a component cable.

As long as we're dwelling on the negatives, we should also mention that not only will HDMI cables be absent from the box, both Hirai and Ken Kutaragi are leaning away from even including component action with either package.

PS3 Fanboy thinks it's pretty cool that Sony is only bundling cables that the majority of tvs have (i.e. only composite and s-video).
Article
Not sure that I understand Sony's marketing plan. They are reportedly trying to drive mass market adoption of BluRay, but this move goes clearly against that. You all know what will happen. Joe six pack will go out and buy a BluRay disk to go with their shiny new PS3. They'll put that BD disk into their Sony, which by the way is connected to their TV with the cables included with the machine because they'll be sure that Sony would have included all of the A/V cables necessary to get the most from the only True HD device on the market. They'll start the BD movie being outputted in all of its glory via S-video, and they'll be amazingly UNDERWHELMED!!! Then they'll write-off BD as not being worth a $10 - $20 premium per disk over regular DVDs because they don't look any better than DVDs. I realize that folks here know the difference among the different connections, but the average person on the street to whom they are marketing mass adoption generally does not. This just doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense given that they are already taking a huge hit on just including a BD drive in the first place.

My thinking is that they are hoping to make a killing on their own sony branded component and hdmi ps3 cables. Thats where the profits are made.
it may come with bluray but when you toss in the need for a headset(if it ever features online play) and component cables(lets assume they buy the set that says "ps3 Component cables" just as people buy the MS ones), youre looking at an additional 40 - 60.00 for those 2 pieces.

I seriously think they are shooting themselves in the foot. Maybe even going a step further and shooting themselves in the foot with a shotgun...
The lack on including even a component cable would be down-right idiotic. They push so much for the HD era and the HD capability but, here they are saying, our PS3 does HD movies and games but, you won't be able to get that unless you spend another 40-60 bucks (or worse if it's an HDMI cable). Banking on the accessories is fine but, c'mon... At least MS was smart in including component with the Premium package.

oy... man, let's boil this down... the unit will cost 600, HDMI cable will cost roughly 80, extra controller 50, headset 20, a single game will cost 60.
So before taxes, that's $810.00 just for two controllers and one game. Obviously, you want to buy more games than that plus since it's a Blu-Ray player, you want to buy a movie or two. Movies 25 each, plus another game, 60.
So if you only got two games and one BD movie, plus the other things mentioned you are looking at roughly 895.00 before taxes.
ack.

HDMi cable will only cost $20 for a good quality cable. Unless you listen to the BB and CC sales crap and buy one of their over priced Monster HDMI cables.

I believe Jon is talking about your average consumer, and they will no doubt buy either a Sony branded cable at an outrageous price, or a Monster branded one that costs even more.
There are soooooo many websites that carry good cheap cables.
Jon your costs have made an already outrageous price look even more laughable

yeah, average joe six-pack will go for even the more expensive ones... $120 for a 3 foot run....
I personally really am happy with the Bluejeancables company. HDMI cable 3' cable costs only 15.50. I got a 40 or 45 foot run for extra measure for my projector which cost under 86.00 back when I got it. You cannot beat those prices!!
