We say confirmed with a question mark because the debate is still up in the air, but apparently there was a little scuffle between a group of message board visitors and a Gran Turismo development staff member regaring the issue of damage to the licensed cars. The staff member worked on Gran Turismo HD and is hard at work on Gran Turismo 5, which is awesome. But here are a few quotes from the guy worth scratching our chins over:
"...We're not ready to implement damage until they can be shown in a truly authentic way (which is extremely hard work if you think about it)."
Damage in Gran Turismo would make the franchise unstoppable, don't you think? He responds: "No I mean, really, really, really hard work... to the extent of creating another game, almost. From our standards, what other games are doing is "simplified damage". You know how [anal] we are when making our games... we would want to simulate every single dent differently."
Not sure why they bleeped out anal -- it's a perfectly appropriate word, because Polyphony Digital really does get down to the most painstaking detail when crafting these games. So what's this sound like to you? The staff member who said this checks out. He's completely legit (but we can't reveal the obvious). We're saying there won't be damage this time. Maybe for GT5 A-Spec or something. I dunno. I won't mind. Besides, you're not supposed to crash in the driving sim games. link

| Aside from any work involved, it would be really, really expensive or even impossible. From what I understand, the car manufacturers don't want crash damage on their licensed vehicles. | |

| I don't knonw about the programming per se. It's more collision detection, animations, and so forth. I"m sure it can be done. Just depends how realistic they want to get, per se. I've seen a car flippring in GT.
Damage is cool for the effects and visuals, but it's more about the car's performance. This is maybe where it gets complicated. Think about getting a blown tire, 8).
Nonetheless, Forza 2 is implementing damage. I think even NASCAR does.
And I can understand why car manufactures don't won't damgae. It's more a subtle thing about our futre car purchaess. If we play cars that get "damaged" we may corrilate it to the real cars and NOT purchase it. Per se, these video games can be a show room for the manufacturers.

| That's not the most exciting looking track to show off pics, either. Not only does the car look sub-par, but that track's environment looks pretty boring. Although, it could just be the track. | |

Maybe they truly are focusing all on gameplay/plysics, etc with graphics being a distant after though.
Could be the game that sim fans love for that. Of course I'm sure many would like both.

| Forza 2 has been just what I have been looking for, in terms of getting a Racing Sim, so regardless of how it looks, I will be getting it...
It'll hold me over until GT 5 comes out!

Maybe you were thinking the CG from E3 was going to be how the gameplay would look? or perhaps the replay pics? Dev's do that all the time unfortunately, of fourse Killzone is famous for this though it has been happending on all consoles long before... edit: well we haven't seen Killzone yet, so hard to know but it is not going to look that good, lol

It lookd and definitely not crappy. Not sure if I'm supposed to say that, but it looked fracking awesome and played smooth as butter. There were some awesome crazy things (in terms of detail) that I couldn't keep up. My car was all over the damn place b/c my tires were all heated up. I watched them cool down and there was a noticeable difference in handling. It was pretty awesome.
I'm not sure how much I'm supposed to say so I'll stop there, but I did think it looked and played awesome when we saw it in March.
