The incredible, rentable PS3!

Success breeds success. That's certainly proving true with the PS3 as many companies, industry watchers and entrepreneurs are raising their collective eyebrows at the PS3's positive impact on the Folding@Home project and the mission to find a cure for cancer.

Sony is apparently being pitched a number of potential Folding@Home follow-ups. "We are discussing various options with companies and exploring commercial applications," said Sony's chief technology officer, Masa Chatani. With the Folding@Home initiative benefiting from 82,000 PS3 users (the equivalent computational power of 1.2 MILLION PCs if fired up in tandem), will it be long before the private sector seeks to commercialize the incredible power of the networked PS3? And how long before groups of like-minded PS3 end-user teams cash in on their valuable "idle time?"

"A start-up or a pharmaceutical company that lacks a super-computer could utilize this kind of infrastructure."

Think about it. link
