PS3 has flown past the 3 million mark!

Upon the European launch, we wrote up an article about the "before" sales of the PlayStation 3 and let you guys guess where the numbers would land, given another week. Well, we had a very professional brain fart (in the form of multiple tests, group presentations, and an annoying large paper) and decided to let the "after" post come... today. What did we find? Good stuff.

At least, according to VGCharts, the PlayStation 3 has surpassed the 3 million mark. What's neat, too, according to the same chart, is that the PS3 has sold more in Europe in the course of two weekends than it has sold in Japan in four months! We've got more good PS3 sales news as the day progresses, but it almost seems like a slow news day right now. When do you guys think the PS3 will break 4 million, now that things will slow down?link

I went to VGCharts web site and they have no 2007 numbers other then Japan. So I guess we will have to take the articles word for it.

I wonder how many PS3's are only or 90% used for a Blu-ray player. I know I'm planning on buying one but I do not think it will get much game time. If I believe that this is true I bet when the first sub $400 Blu-ray players come to the market the PS3 sales plummet... Maybe not but it should be interesting later in the the year....

It's not hard to imagine that a lot of the PS3's are being primarly used as movie players. There still simply aren't enough games to make the system worthwhile as solely a video game system.

I think even if the Blu-ray players come into the market of $400.00, it won't matter too much because the PS3 is still multifunctional, ie it still DOES play games, and also... the PS3 is still rated as one of the top BD Players at ANY pricepoint. If I were to do it all over again, and I had a choice between a mid $400 BD player and the PS3, I would still choose the PS3.

instead of bragging about that, I bet Sony's concerned. I would definately wait alittle bit for the cheaper standalone blewray players.

They didn't reach their stated goals (neither did their main competitor either), that is true. However they have broken records in Europe so I don't know if they'd be super concerned. They may be forced to drop prices sooner than they wanted.

I think by the time sub $400 BD players come out Sony will hopefully have some great games out for the PS3 such that people having to make that choice will see the multi-function benefit of choosing the PS3 over a standalone.
