Teiyu Goto, the creative force behind the PS3's crazy grill/taco/mirror/futuristic weapon design, talked about the Spider-Man font recently and how it came to be located so nicely on Sony's machine. He said this in his super-artsy design lingo: "Take the PS2 logo - we created it to blend in with the rectangular shape of the console. Personally, I feel very strongly that the logo would not have looked right on PS3. If you really look at the PS3 contour carefully, it is rounded when viewing the console in profile. Rather than creating a typography with all the risks that entails, it was wiser to use the one from Spider-Man, for which Sony has the rights." If you've got the rights, use 'em, right?
In addition to that, Goto smartly added his boss into the mix so as to move his laziness in typography out of the conversation (we kid, making fonts is tough... we guess): "It was also the wish of President Kutaragi, who insisted that I use this typography. In fact, the logo was one of the first elements he decided on and the logo may have been the motivating force behind the shape of PS3." Okay, so that mystery is solved. | I agree, that we tend to think of it as the Spider-man Logo, but it's a hard argument. It's a cool font, first and foremost. Secondly, if they used any other font, Sony would get reemed for it anway. The masses would probably say, "Oh that's a gay font" or something to that extent.
I think they're just taking flak because it's Sony. | |
