I'm going to defend sony a bit so hold on to your seats folks(until the 2nd last paragraph that is)...
Any console thats as high tech as ps3 and 360 are going to have issues, theres no way around that. Nintendo always does their homework and seems to build their consoles around what will cause the least issues(I respect that, now only if they made games that appealed to me!). This in turn limits performance in the case of the Wiis specs, but I think we can all agree that the Wii will be almost entirely problem free.
Just from a heat perspective: They have a lower clocked cpu and less cores so a lot less heat right off the bat. A lower clocked GPU so again, less heat. They test their systems vigorously, something MS and Sony should take note of IMO.
If the PS3 has more problems than the 360, its because that nvidia gpu is a furnace in itself, add in the Cell and ofcourse there will be issues. I think they had iffy memory too, it displayed problems and something about not getting it fixed in time for the 1st run? Dont quote me on that.
I think there were problems with some memory chips on the 360 werent there? Or faulty GPUs or no cpu grease put between the mobos and cpus? Theres so much that can go wrong when you have 2,000 parts in a box of these sizes.
Everyone take your pc gaming rig components and shove them into a box that small...yeah good luck with that
The difference between MS and Sony is that Sony simply will not and cannot fix boxes like MS has done directly(skipping retailers like EB where you can walk in and get a new one). They dont have the $$ to do so even if they wanted to do it. They cant soak up millions in shipping costs like MS did for overnighting systems, they are already bleeding $$. Did anyone actually contact Sony and get a ps2 replaced? All replacements came from warranties and retailers like EB. Sony never stepped in themselves.
Will it matter? Nope. The majority of the PS3 buyers wont care who does what. To me it speaks volumes that MS stepped in. We can all say "they shouldnt have to do that in the 1st place though" True, but thats not reality my friends
UPDATE:
Now pretend the following is coming from someone who doesnt have a background of "sony hating" and give me your opinions...
It has just come to my attention that they only made the 500,000 not only because the blue diodes are in short supply, but also because they are fully expecting massive problems with those first half million. Replacing a portion of 500,000 is a lot easier than a portion of a 1,000,000.
In the time it takes to produce and ship the 1st batch, the 2nd run will have been thru the ringer so to speak and will be less problematic. Opinions? Is this planned? If so....smart move?
Things that make ya go Hmmmmmmmmmm.......
