Editor's Note: A large majority of the e-mails we have received see Kaplan's quote as blaming either Sony, Sony's audience, or both. But a few e-mails insist that she wasn't assigning blame at all. That's the beauty of quotations; they're always up for interpretation. Long story short -- it was tacky at best to rehash tragic shooting deaths to score public relations points.
We're not really fans of "blame the victim" here at PS3 News. So imagine our dismay when Wii spokesperson Perrin Kaplan let loose this bombshell to GameSpy:
Gamespy: So, the PlayStation 3 launch coincided with the Wii launch. What kind of impact did that have on your success? Did it help the Wii? Was it a non-factor?
Perrin Kaplan: Well, we didn't have anyone in line that got shot waiting for our system. So there's one sign of the different approaches between our two companies. I think that there were really two different audiences. The core gamer probably went out and tried to purchase both systems. I think Sony's efforts were in trying to get the core gamer to accept and adopt it, which for them in the PS2 era, spread to the mass consumer. I think we were just really prepared. Years of experience doing this ensured that we would have a very good launch.
That inference is so ludicrous that it would be like Jack Tretton saying that Jennifer Lea Strange died trying to win a Nintendo Wii, so it's a sign of different approaches between Sony and Nintendo. You know, two different audiences and all.
Unbelievable.
