Background Downloading Coming to PS3 Soon With 1.6 Update

In Game Informer's interview with Sony's Phil Harrison, it was confirmed that PS3 gamers will be able to download content from the PS3's Playstation Store online while still having the ability to use the console (aka background downloading).
From Game Informer: "You mentioned today, background downloads. Will that be part of it, and what are some of the other things that you have planned for that?

Harrison: The only thing I can talk about is that background downloading will be part of the 1.6 upgrade. There’s a bunch of other stuff, but Kawanishi-san would kill me if I was to reveal all of the details."

No more leaving your PS3 idle while you download from the PS Online Store. The Xbox 360 initially suffered from the same problem while downloading, which was also upgraded to allow background downloads. The Playstation 3's System Software is currently 1.51, so the update should be coming soon. Maybe in time for a much welcomed busy March on the PS3.
