Sony's Phil Harrison had a lot to say at D.I.C.E 2007, but one of the more interesting tidbits of info came regarding the PS3's online future. The company president didn't get into specific details, but he admitted that in order to win yet another generation, the Network needs to be a "focus."
"The moment you buy [a PS3] you enter a long-term relationship," is one of Harrison's most reported quotes. This means the entire functionality of the system should upgrade and evolve over time, and while Sony doesn't appear to have plans to integrate a premium online service like Microsoft's Xbox Live, Sony doesn't plan to skimp on the Network. Harrison believes there's nothing that will stop the PS3 from eventually equaling the Live service in just about every capacity, but only time will tell...
After stepping up to demo SingStar, Harrison commented on the current state of the Network and said simply, "we still need to do more." The plans to build on the Network are still vague, but we do know Sony intends to keep everything free of charge. That alone is enough to keep everyone's attention, and if Sony can eventually offer an online service that, for all intents and purposes, is equivalent to Live and is free, that would be a huge boost for the PS3.
