With Midway publishing Unreal Tournament 3, and creating such a tight relationship with the guys at Epic it's no wonder they've decided (much like many other developers and publishers) to use Unreal Engine 3 to power their games. But UE3 to power Mortal Kombat? Yep, it is very true. It may seem a little weird, but it only goes to show the potential of the engine's limitless flexibility. Creator Ed Boon spoke to GameInformer and explained to GI that this new Mortal Kombat will be completely different than any MK title before it.
Executing moves will be done differently, no more 'spelling the alphabet' and having to hit 8 buttons in order to pull of a move, or even a fatality. The 3 fighting styles per fighter are also getting removed, to further distance the game from the rest of the series. Ed Boon promises something completely different, and "unbelievably unexpected". Lastly, Boon says the game will have a very dark and gritty aesthetic style, and cites Gears of War as the inspiration for the decision. At the moment, the predicted release date is for late 2008, so this game's still got a lot of development time left.
