Just bought a PS3

As I mentioned in the xbox board, I turned on the old xbox 360 yesterday and boom...three red rings...went through the troubleshooting tips...no luck...hardware failure...had to haggle with the customer service at Macrohard to extend my warranty for a free repair.

Anyway, I'll be out about 2 full weeks from gaming...so I shelled out for the 60gb PS3...

First impressions are: man is this thing sexy! I wanted to just stare at it for a while before I "plugged her in and turned her on". Ok, sorry

Seriously...it is pretty nice, much quieter than the 360. 1080p thru the sony60a2000 is very very solid. BUT...downloads are agonizingly slow, yes? I had to go through 2 system updates which lasted at least 2 hours each. Demo downloads take just as long...so I'm sure Sony has some work to do on this end.

BluRay playback is great, except for the occassional 5 second pauses..WTF!

I got Resistance Fall of Man, which seems cool....but I'm having a hard time using the controller...I haven't used a PS controller in a few years, and compared to the xbox 360, it feels really small and uncomfortable. I hope this gets better...does anyone else have this problem? I'm a tall guy with big hands, so that could be the issue, the 360 controller is perfect for me, but this PS3 pad seems awkward as heck.

I lke the weight of the controller- its hurts my left wrist use the 360 one for more than an hour. I dont have that problem with the PS3. You'll like the new Nyko controller coming out soon- it's just like the 360's.

The updates suck, but maybe they'll have an update for that, too lol

dam, your downloads are much longer than mine (which are still somewhat long). To me, they seem to be about the same as 360 downloads, sometimes longer sometimes shorter depending on some unknown factor. I'm using a 20GB PS3 though with a Lynksys wireless (might be faster than the 60GB's built in) for both my PS3 and 360.

Hey Goat..I'm going wireless thru a linksys too...but I've heard it's more Sony's network than anything...if you've it all hooked up right.

What I meant was I'm using a wireless gaming adapter at the PS3 on top of the wireless router. 60GB has wifi built in, though you could opt not use that and go through the ethernet port as well I believe.

Mine was very much plug and play, took about 2 minutes to configure on the PC then plug and play for both my PS3 and 360.

edit: could be that I'm wireless hence slowing down my 360 speed as well? or that I just don't have "phat pipe" in my area with comcast, but seems to work great with gaming. No lag ever in Resistance with 40 people and 360 is pretty good most of the time with 12-14 in GRAW.

I think the controller is a bit small and too light, but perhaps that's simply because I am more used to the 360 controller. Not sure, but I do get more wrist pain while playing the PS3 than the 360. That Nyko controller sounds interesting tho. Thanks for the tip on that Brew!

The 5 second pause deal seems to have been caused by the 1.50 update and not fixed in the recent 1.51 update. Not sure what's up with that, but I hope they fix it soon!

Yeah, the pausing is pretty certain to have been caused by 1.50 update. People all over the internet have been complaining about it and that it's only started happening since the update.

I like the controller size although, I don't like the weight of the controller as much as you guys are sayin'. It feels cheaper to me than that of the 360 or even the Wii Remote. Once they put the rumble feature into the PS 3 remote, I think it'll make my complaint go away!

Welcome to the club! OK my favorite online game right now is R:FOM. So look for an online game in the custom game area. Search for deathmatch and the USS Lexington for the map. There is a bunch of 1 shot kill games that are a blast to play.
