Well, folks. We talked about a few of the rumors on the show, including a price drop, PS3 Slim and a firmware update, but there is a new rumor on the block. This firmware update may include backwards compatibility.
Also, it is looking like the PS3 Slim may hit stores as early as Sept 1st at a $299 price point. We will keep you posted as we get more concrete info. That may only be confirmed at the 3 hour Sony Press Briefing on Aug 18th.

Full firmware backwards compatibility? Sign me up! I can finally trade in my jet engine 60GB to get something that'll stay quiet for like a minute longer! Or even just get the slim PS3!

I don't know if thats a good thing. I got the 80GB/MGS4 bundle which is backward compatible through software, not hardware like the earlier ones. Here's an article I found with a list of them. Some of the games do not play smoothly. For example, God of War plays fine, but Ratchet and Clank frame rate is really slow and totally makes the game unplayable. Unless the update fixes that stuff also. Geoff, what have you heard?

2Times, my understanding is that a simple software emulation is not what they were doing. I believe it's coding in the firmware to allow the cell processor to do hardware emulation to mimic the PS2 processor to play all the games as normal, not selective like a software emulation.

Reader Cloud works at an FYE, and says his store just got these posters in. As you can see, they're advertising some pretty damn hefty price reductions for the two models of the PlayStation 3.
The 80GB system - which currently retails for $400 - is down to $300. The 160GB system - which includes Uncharted, and normally goes for $500 - is down to $400.
Neither is advertised as a "sale", or "for a limited time only". They're advertised as a "new low price", with the disclaimer "while supplies last".
And what happens when supplies of these models run out? Oh, yeah....

As if K-Mart's front-page ad wasn't enough to confirm, Sony's officially announced their PlayStation 3 Slim that retails for $100 less than the current PlayStation 3 fat, which is also getting a price cut. Live updates coming.
The slim will come with a 120GB drive, and will be 33% smaller and 36% lighter than the standard PlayStation 3, as well as using 34% less power. The $300 price will apply to all PlayStation 3s starting tomorrow. The Slim will be available everywhere by the first week of September.
Still waiting on the details about how many USB ports there are, what the package contains and whether or not anything else has changed.

Does the 20GB fan run loud? I got a day one PS3 and that thing is nearly silent. The fans on my plasma TV, which are quiet, are louder. Since it is a smaller design I would imagine it sound like a laptop fan.

Big pictures here (2 USB, and all the rest of the connections look the same).. No word if it has an external power supply or internal yet (my guess is external)..
