Install "Other OS" instructions at Playstation.com

Want Linux?

Here are links to the install instructions from Playstation US:

PlayStation.com - Support

Open Platform for PLAYSTATION®3

They provide a link to Yellow Dog Linux:
Terra Soft -- Linux for PowerStation, Playstation, PS3, QS22, Apple PowerPC, and IBM, AMCC, and Freescale Power architecture chips.

It costs about $49 for the dvd w/ no support. I updated free dl links below.

Terra Soft -- Linux for PowerStation, Playstation, PS3, QS22, Apple PowerPC, and IBM, AMCC, and Freescale Power architecture chips.

You may want to consider backing up and upgrading the hard drive before the install.

Here is a link to the Ubuntu PS3 page:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PlayStation_3 (this is the source of most of the info below).

A few places I have looked suggest using Xubuntu and selecting the 2nd link (desktop) under Xubuntu.

It is free, and even YDL users seem to be using it.

If you screw up your respolution settings you can always exit out (or power off) and enter: boot-game-os when promted at the kboot screen.

A couple of things to note:

I selected the smaller 10 gig partition for my linux os. I plan on using an external usb drive for my media files for now. If I like it I will upgrade the HD size. The instructions specifically mention that a small partition is just fine.

Check out your monitors/tv's specs before getting started. I went with the native resolution of my set

Quote:
Video Modes

Depending on what video output you are using for your PS3, you may need to boot the installer with a different video mode. To do this, type install video=ps3fb:mode:X at the kboot prompt, where X is (from ps3-video-mode):

0:auto mode
YUV 60Hz 1:480i 2:480p 3:720p 4:1080i 5:1080p
YUV 50Hz 6:576i 7:576p 8:720p 9:1080i 10:1080p
RGB 60Hz 33:480i 34:480p 35:720p 36:1080i 37:1080p
RGB 50Hz 38:576i 39:576p 40:720p 41:1080i 42:1080p
VESA 11:WXGA 12:SXGA 13:WUXGA

full screen mode:
So at install I entered:

kboot: install video=ps3fb:mode:3

The native resolution of my screen is 720p and it is 60hz. (If you are unsure download a pdf version of your manual and search for hz, etc.)

On my 1st shot I didn't enter resolution info. So the install screens were out of proportion with my screen size. I powered down and entered the command to boot the game os, reformatted and started again. I was curious to see what would happen.

Make sure that your mouse and keyboard are working. Do a test run on the PS3 webbrowser before getting started. You will be fubar and have to shut down if you don't. I am using a gyration ultra that seems to be golden so far.

The install disc will fit on a cd. Use a burning program that can write from ISO files.

I don't have an "always on" desktop or NAS right now. That is down the line. So to stream music/media I have to boot a laptop...not a big deal...but just one more thing to to.

Additionally there are some iPhone remote apps for linux that I want to try out....

I have been looking for inexpensive solutions (read free) that can tie in a bunch of stuff I have had laying around.

I am going to try to link my 300gb external hd into the network using the ps3.

Xubuntu works pretty well on the ps3. I am having some issues getting it connected to the network--it looks like a fairly common issue.

Once I have that set up I am going to see if I can get Pandora radio to load on my PS3 finally...

It would be outstanding to have a free home media computer built into the PS3....I have put this off for a long time. However, you have to ask yourself, as easy as this is, and with the capability being there, why wouldn't you?

The catch so far, for me at least, seems to be configuring a network connection. There may be other issues like audio output that will need to be contented with as well.

Fun little project though. If all else fails I can always check out the ydl version.

Edit: my wired network connection is now working.
Looks like there may be an audio output issue with xubuntu. Too bad it runs pretty smoothly and looks good and my 300gb hd is detected and working.

Free 6.0 YDL is downloading for a mirror link at Terrasoft.

Directions here:
Terra Soft -- Linux for PowerStation, Playstation, PS3, QS22, Apple PowerPC, and IBM, AMCC, and Freescale Power architecture chips.

Update:
Temporary verdict on Xubuntu: runs well on PS3, relatively easy install. Looks like it may have issues supporting a full on multi media set up. Final issue involved being unable to enter my password in the terminal to make configuration changes. I suppose if I spent more time messing with this it might work. But I will check out YDL for now and see how that pans out before investing anymore time.

Free YDL ISO is downloaded and being written. It is a 3.7gb file. So a DVD will be needed. I am still only allocating 10gb of drive space for the experiment...

Update:
Temporary verdict on YDL. All slowness concerns aside. Right off the bat the install has a lot more going for it. Much more functionality and ease of use, not to mention the quality of the GUI. For serious users this might be a non-issue. However, I am happy with what I have seen so far. The 10gb partition allocated for the install was questioned during the process. It tired to incorporate my external drive as part of the process. The ps3 could provide an interesting way to configure a car pc down the line. I just hope that this set up isn't as slow as people say it is because it looks really clean so far. If I like this version I will provide some pics on the n ext install (after I upgrade drive space). I was too busy and too lazy (read I wanted to finish before 2 am) to set up the vid capture...

YDL Seems pretty solid!! Audio works, it was networked right off the bat...it even looks like pandora radio might work...there may be some potential on this platform after all.

Ok had a chance to play around with it...looks decent. I have mine running in 720p. When I bump it up to 1080i it gets a little harder to read words across the room. Flash seems to work, but youtube and pandora do not...they are 2 tests that failed in the other setup as well. There is an option to switch to the PS3 xmb right in YDL which makes it much easier to switch. All in all this is a pretty functional setup...slow but it works. I am having a few problems getting it to go full screen, right now it is a window surrounded by black bars (that won't work for video playback). I tried tweaking but then it seemed to be too big. So, YDL isn't perfect, but it looks like something worth playing with. I can't complain about a free computer.

It is a gateway drug...

It started small...just a simple distro installed on my PS3. Then it was another flavor, and another...suddenly before I knew it something had changed.

It wasn't enough. I had to install linux on everything.

A dual boot laptop using Wubi, a free linux based firewall on an old server....I have even started to wonder if I could install linux on a dog or cat...

It is bad...don't be tempted; stop now while you have a life.
