The catch so far, for me at least, seems to be configuring a network connection. There may be other issues like audio output that will need to be contented with as well.
Fun little project though. If all else fails I can always check out the ydl version.
Edit: my wired network connection is now working.
Looks like there may be an audio output issue with xubuntu. Too bad it runs pretty smoothly and looks good and my 300gb hd is detected and working.
Free 6.0 YDL is downloading for a mirror link at Terrasoft.

Update:
Temporary verdict on Xubuntu: runs well on PS3, relatively easy install. Looks like it may have issues supporting a full on multi media set up. Final issue involved being unable to enter my password in the terminal to make configuration changes. I suppose if I spent more time messing with this it might work. But I will check out YDL for now and see how that pans out before investing anymore time.
Free YDL ISO is downloaded and being written. It is a 3.7gb file. So a DVD will be needed. I am still only allocating 10gb of drive space for the experiment...
Update:
Temporary verdict on YDL. All slowness concerns aside. Right off the bat the install has a lot more going for it. Much more functionality and ease of use, not to mention the quality of the GUI. For serious users this might be a non-issue. However, I am happy with what I have seen so far. The 10gb partition allocated for the install was questioned during the process. It tired to incorporate my external drive as part of the process. The ps3 could provide an interesting way to configure a car pc down the line. I just hope that this set up isn't as slow as people say it is because it looks really clean so far. If I like this version I will provide some pics on the n ext install (after I upgrade drive space). I was too busy and too lazy (read I wanted to finish before 2 am) to set up the vid capture...
YDL Seems pretty solid!! Audio works, it was networked right off the bat...it even looks like pandora radio might work...there may be some potential on this platform after all.
Ok had a chance to play around with it...looks decent. I have mine running in 720p. When I bump it up to 1080i it gets a little harder to read words across the room. Flash seems to work, but youtube and pandora do not...they are 2 tests that failed in the other setup as well. There is an option to switch to the PS3 xmb right in YDL which makes it much easier to switch. All in all this is a pretty functional setup...slow but it works. I am having a few problems getting it to go full screen, right now it is a window surrounded by black bars (that won't work for video playback). I tried tweaking but then it seemed to be too big. So, YDL isn't perfect, but it looks like something worth playing with. I can't complain about a free computer.
