I've got some videos on my PC, but was wondering if I could transfer them over to a USB Hard drive and then plug that into the PS3 to play the videos? If so, what are the various formats that the PS3 will support like this?
Thanks, | |

Eventually I figured out I could just in the digital camera directly. I would just experiment with what you have to see what works, I think if you have the most current firmware it is supposed to support a lot of codecs.
One day I'll probabaly buy a camcorder that can directly link up to my PS3 for video transferring.

| That should work Huff. I've been able to view videos on my PS3 by using a USB thumb-drive and with a usb-powered HD. The videos I think were mpeg. | |

Simple to use and it rips DVD straight to MP4 format with a huge assortment of quality options. I ripped this DVD at the highest 480p level for both video and audio, it took the full 30 minutes the video ran to rip it, and it took up 837GB.
I then put it on a USB HD in a "VIDEO" folder, plugged it in to the PS3 and it played like a charm. It loses a little bit of quality, but it's pretty good for those movies that you want to archive (like me) and still be able to watch on the PS3.
Not a bad little application for $29!! I also heard that the PS3 will play native VOB files so I may look at a DVD ripper that will pull the VOB straight out as well.

Also, the PS3 will play native VOB files (very nicely I might add) from an external device. I tried out DVD Decrypter and it works well for ripping VOBs.
I'm going to try and go the VOB route after comparing Video and Audio quality, but I still have to figure out how to get around the 4GB limit on FAT32 drives.

In fact, I've been thinking about getting a couple of external terabyte drives and backing up my whole collection that way, with legally owned titles of course.
Are you trying to format a drive over 4GBs to FAT32? A little program called Partition Magic will do that for you.

I got the USB HD formated full with FAT32, but when I try to copy an 8GB VOB from my laptop HD to the USB HD it says it can't do it. I'm confused.

| I'm pretty sure that FAT32 will only support individual files under 4GB. | |
