| Official Word from Sony on 480p Downrezing Those of you who read THIS THREAD know that reports have been coming in about the PS3 downrezing video signals to 480p when a set cannot accept a 720p signal. Older mits and other TV's with native resolutions of only 480i, 480p and 1080i cannot view 1801i from a PS3 because the PS3 will downrez the signal to 480p.
Well I asked for the official word from Sony and got the following: Quote:
A small number of older High Definition television sets found in the United
States only have 1080i inputs for HD signals. Those televisions will
currently only play some PS3 titles at 480p resolution. PS3 games render
images at either 720p or 1080p for High Definition, and you need 720p input
on the TV to play select games that do not support 1080p. This is an
issue on the side of the individual television sets, which do not accept
720p input, so when a game outputs an HD signal only at 720p, these select
TVs have to display the game at 480p instead.
| Please don't shoot the messenger.
Please note that the release DOES says that those televisions will "currently" only play some of the PS3 titles at 480p. This leads me to believe that a fix is in the works. I certainly hope so for the sake of people with TV's more than a couple of years old that will not accept a 720p signal.
Wanted to pass on the info as quickly as I could. Not sure if the official word is out there on other sites yet and wanted everyone to know the scoop.

One developer has spoke openly about this on both matters.
On the area of the dev kit, there is no display setting for an interlaced signal! From what he said, Sony was telling the developers to create their own software fixes when a console was set to 1080i.
He also stated that Sony wanted only 'progessive' resolutions supported.

| No fear of shooting the messenger. I can buy a whole lot of 360 and Wii games for the grand I would drop on a PS3. It actually makes me feel like my choice is resolved.
Anyhow, Guitar Hero's controller does not work with it, no Trogdor, No PS3.

Sure thing, I found the post from one developer at AVS and someone posted another link from a PS3 forum from a Resistance developer. They both were pointing the fingers at Sony.
Give me a bit to find the exact URL, OK?

Pay attention to Darknight's comments and also check out his link on that page. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...8&page=3&pp=60
This link contains a Resistance developer, 'jstevenson', holding his ground.
It is a very long thread. I couldn't remember exactly what page he explained but you see his response on that page that they intended support 1080i. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthre...124597&page=33
I hope this helps. | |

Sony has contacted us to let us know that they may have spoken a bit prematurely. SCEA's Dave Karraker, Sr. Director, Corporate Communications, informed GameDaily BIZ that they currently cannot confirm that this 1080i issue will be resolved via a firmware patch. The official line is now that they are "looking into the issue and haven't stated any actions that will be taken regarding it."

Sony told the devs not to use the internal scaler since it is for Blu-ray use.
Remember, you can play a Blu-Ray movie perfectly fine in 1080i. But you can not play a game in 1080i which is weird because they have 1080P option. So their SDK nulls out interlaced signals.

Well that's good news. At least they fixed that easily, as that was a pretty strange problem to have.
