Sony Sheds No Light On "80010514" Error

There's no doubt that the PlayStation 3 is a remarkably reliable machine, as indicated by very low defective ratios reported by major retailers and general owner satisfaction with the system. However, there is one error that seems to have popped up a bit more frequently, and it's known as the "80010514" error, which has caused a few problems for PS3 users.

But according to Eurogamer, Sony really doesn't know what this error is, nor do they consider it a problem. "80010514" might pop up after the failure of the Blu-Ray drive, so GameRevolver decided to contact Sony support to see what they had to say. Sony responded by saying the error "is not common," and that a "simple reset of the system" should fix everything. Still, this error can persist, and if that happens, there appears to be one of two causes: 1. it's a faulty sector on the internal hard drive, or 2. it's due to a faulty installation of software/firmware. Both can cause serious problems, but nobody can seem to pin down an exact reason for the Blu-Ray failure that precedes "80010514."

We haven't heard anything about this error until now, and we certainly haven't seen it. We believe Sony when they say it's not common, but if it's making the news headlines, more than a few people have experienced this failure. Still, we wouldn't worry too much about it. The PS3's defective ratio remains amazingly low, which rivals the Wii and is in stark contrast to the failure-prone Xbox 360.
