This should certainly breath new life into all of my Fox Blurays! Besides, I can finally test out all three tracks (PCM, TrueHD and DTS-MA) on Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I'm sure they all sound exactly the same, but now I can be sure!
I'm anxious to pop in Die Hard 4 and Pan's Labyrinth. Can't wait.

Any thoughts?

| I don't know, but I know the PS3 outputs 7.1 PCM natively. It's weird... Hopefully it doesn't down-convert it to 5.1. | |

Firmware update 2.30 for the PlayStation 3 will be arriving as soon as Sony is done upgrading the PlayStation Store, which should be next week some time. The unofficial date is April 15 - as supplied by SCEJ, but nothing official from SCEE or SCEA - and according to GameSpot, update 2.30 brings along something special for Blu-Ray movies: DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and DTS-HD Master Audio.
Sony America has confirmed the two new features, and if you weren't aware, DTS stands for Digital Theater System; it's a multichannel, digital surround-sound format, while the Master Audio is a "lossless codec that delivers sound to movie fans at 24.5 megabits per second." Not surprisingly, that's a whole lot faster than standard DVD sound. This new option will be just that, an option- DTS-HD High Resolution audio can be enabled or disabled depending on your home theater setup. If you can use it, though, it will "stream explosions, speech, and everything else at a constant bit rate of 6.0 Mbps." Now that Blu-Ray has officially won the format war, it only makes sense to enhance the experience, yes?
Over 100 Blu-Ray movies already support these new features, and we'll let you know when we have an exact date for firmware update 2.30. When we get it, that means we'll also have the completion date for the Store upgrade, which very well could be April 15. In fact, we're counting on it. Stay tuned! link

Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Hill Valley, 2015 Age: 25 | Just FYI for anyone out there wondering: The PS3 doesn't decode 7.1 DTS-MA tracks properly, basically converting them to 5.1 PCM tracks. The PS3 recognizes them as 7.1, but seems it doesn't decode it, leaving you with a 5.1 track. I just hope the decoding process doesn't simply throw those two back channels away.
I was able to get my receiver to show a 7.1 PCM signal on the LED screen when I deselected all of the audio output options except for 7.1 in the PS3 audio settings menu. However, while playing Pan's Labyrinth (the only 7.1 DTS-MA movie I own), no sound was emmited from the left and right back speakers.
Could it be just the Pan's Labyrinth disc? Sure could, but I don't have any other 7.1 DTS-MA discs to check out at the moment.

| It's a problem with certain discs. The stand alone players/receivers had this problem initially until a firmware upgrade fixed it.
If they would have offered this update plus the profile 2.0 update 6 months ago I would have been excited. But since then I've purchased a receiver(Denon 3808) capable of bitstreaming, and a BD30 BD player. And since using both of those I have no desire to go back to the PS3 for BD playback. Everytime I compare the two players, the BD30 easily beats the PS3 by giving me a better or identical experience than the PS3. And once I replace the BD30 with a BD50 which is profile 2.0 comlpliant, things will really be sweet.

| Let us know how you like the BD50 when you get it. I am really happy with my BD30, so unless there's some pretty significant changes aside from being Profile 2.0, I'll keep the BD30.
I remember when the Pan's Labyrinth disc came out, it would only show up as 5.1 on my receiver, but sound would play through the back two channels still. That was fixed with the last update for my receiver, but it's odd that no sound is coming from the back two speakers for yours.
I wonder if this is a problem with the hardware or if it's software based, like Worm suggested.
