We're waiting on the official statement from Sony, but after a new PlayStation 3 SKU - CECHE01 - was given to the Federal Communications Commission, the SKU has apparently cleared approval. There's a short-term confidentiality that will expire on May 14, but in the meantime, we do know that this SKU is based on the 80GB model.
There has been much speculation about the new version, which has been rumored for months now. Some believe it's something similar to the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots bundle that Japan is getting, while others think it's the Ceramic White PS3 (also available in Japan). Many people are hoping this SKU is for the oft-rumored 120GB PlayStation model, which was supposedly "confirmed" by GameStop earlier in the month thanks to a company conference call. The bottom line is that we can't say for certain what CECHE01 really is, but regardless, it's still a new PlayStation 3 SKU. We figure it'll boost PS3 sales numbers no matter what, especially with plenty of big-name software titles on the way.
If you'd like to see the official documentation, feel free. The Label and Location clearly shows the new SKU for the PlayStation 3, but there's nothing here that expressly outlines the details of this new model. We'll keep looking, and hopefully, Sony will unveil CECHE01 shortly.
