Update 2.20 is out for download

The firmware update 2.20 was released yesterday.

The main thing it does is makes the PS3 the first Blu-ray Profile 2.0 player on the market.

Along with that there's a couple very minor features...

Word! I think I signed on right after it went live.

There are some cool things you can do with your PSP too, like listen to music without turning on your TV (by controlling the music on PS3 w/ the PSP).

PlayStation 3 Firmware 2.20 Features: Blu-ray 2.0, more

If you booted up your PlayStation 3 earlier today, you may have noticed a new update available for you to download. Firmware update 2.20 is one we've been expecting for a while now, as Sony has stated that the PS3's next firmware update would include Blu-ray 2.0 support. For those curious what Blu-ray Profile 2.0 is, it allows you to access the internet while you're playing a Blu-ray Live enabled disc.

BD-Live discs feature additional content that you can access via internet. "The 6th Day" and "Walk Hard" will be two of the first Blu-ray Live releases of the year. And to further prove that the PlayStation 3 is the best deal in multimedia toys, it is actually the very first Blu-ray Live compatible player on the market now.

Other updates include the ability to copy/export Music and Photo playlists from your PlayStation 3 to your PSP. In addition, you can now view DivX and WMV files that are larger than 2GB - a quirk many have been complaining about for quite some time. And for the DivX viewers, you can also enable your subtitles, as well.

A Resume Play feature has been added, which will allow you to start playing your DVD or Blu-ray from the very moment you stopped it at, even if you removed the disc and watched another movie, turned off the system, or played another game! Very cool. A Save Target (save file) option has been added to the internet browser, as well as enhanced surfing speeds.

And PSP connectivity has been enhanced to allow you to play music off of your PlayStation 3 without having to turn on your TV. Quite the update, we must say.

Resume Play is a necessary feature that I'm glad they finally implemented!

What I would like is the ability to use my PSP as a "remote control" for the PS3 so I don't have to turn on my TV. I still want my music to come out of my speakers, but I want to be able to view my media server, etc. from my PSP. That would be hotttt!

Isn't that what the last line in Brew's post says it does?

I don't believe so for two reason (but haven't yet tested it).

1) Remote play used to allow you to view/listen to or watch whatever is on your PS3, but you have to listen to it or watch it on your PSP. I want the sound to come out of my main speakers.

2) I don't know if remote play supports streaming media, as opposed to media physically existing on the PS3 itself.

But if so, that would be cool.

I got the impression that that's what the update allows, Beench.

You fire up your stereo and your PSP, and can play your PS3 music without turning on your TV (I'm 98% sure this part is true, as I remember reading something along the lines of "Now you won't have to mess with turning on your TV!" or somesuch). The source of the "PS3 music" I'm not so sure about. I don't know if it can come from the network or physically connected media.

Interesting. That would be cool if they changed that, but it would make remote play kinda strange. I wonder if there is a toggle. Very cool if it works. Shoot, next time I have a few minutes at home I'll have to fire up my PS3 and my PSP and see if it works.
