Hands on with PlayStation 3

Are first impressions meant to last or made to be broken? On Friday I wrote of my first impressions of the PlayStation 3 console. Based on gaming last week, I found the graphics great but otherwise the experience wasn't much different from other games consoles. I picked up the PlayStation 3 Saturday morning when it launched here in Japan and after a weekend with the device find myself with a new opinion of the industry's latest hot product.

What my initial review failed to take into account was the machine's host of non-gaming functions and the network gaming, all of which were not highlighted or available in the demonstrations that I looked at last week. The console has revealed itself to be very flexible when it comes to accessing and playing additional content.

There are several non-gaming functions including a music player, movie player, picture viewer and Internet browser. Unusually for a Sony product, the PlayStation 3 is much more open in terms of the content it can playback and that's good news.

The PlayStation 3 will playback MPEG1, MPEG2 and MPEG4 video, which means that a lot of the content available on the Internet can be played back on your TV through the PS3. Better yet, you can plug an external hard-disk drive into one of the USB ports on the PS3 and playback videos without having to transfer then to the console's own hard-disk drive.

That's pretty cool -- who would have thought a Sony product would offer such openness instead of the usual locked-down support users have grown used to?

Last week I touched on the Internet browser. With the extra resolution available on an HDTV it's quite possible to browse the Web via your television set without all of the scrolling normally required due to the lower resolution of standard definition TV. I discovered that the browser includes Flash support so video from sites such as YouTube can be viewed. Again, another this is a very cool feature and something that's often missing on browsers for devices other than PCs.

When you switch on the PS3 for the first time you are offered the chance to create a PlayStation Network account. This is Sony's online gaming network and your ID also gets you access to the online store. Through the store movie trailers and game demos can be downloaded to the PS3. High-def trailers for the new James Bond movie "Casino Royale" and the animated movie "Open Season" were among those on offer at the weekend. There's also no digital rights management silliness here so the trailers can be saved to an external hard-disk drive and played back on a PC. Fee-based content will likely have some restrictions.

The download was fast too. It felt like Sony's server was next door to my house. It took about 20 seconds to download an 80M byte trailer, which is one of the fastest downloads I've experienced.

The PS3's versatility is just going to grow as other uses are found for the console. Especially intriguing is the "Install other OS" option in the menu.

I also had a chance to try out online gaming with a copy of "Ridge Racer 7." On launch day afternoon I did a few laps with players identified by their accounts as being in Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and found smooth sailing. The game allows users to send fixed-text messages to other players which it automatically translates into the language of the recipient, which is a nice touch.

I do have a few gripes. First of all, why isn't there a high-definition cable in the box? The PS3 is meant to be all about high-definition gaming, so it seems a little cheap of Sony to ship the consoles without such a cable. Of course users are pushed to buy Sony's own cable, which costs ¥4,480 (US$38). It would be better to include the HD cable than the Ethernet cable, which a lot of people already have, but I suppose that's the point. Most people have the Ethernet cable so leaving it out of the box won't mean an extra sale for Sony.

Also, what's with the user account setting? When I selected Japan as my country it only allowed me to choose Japanese as my language. The on-screen menu can be set to one of several languages, so why assume in the account settings that Japanese is the only language understood by gamers in Japan?

What are they thinking, this totally cracks me up... I know it had been reported before but I thought it was funny that they included an Ethernet cable...

lol! wow, like most of us don't have plenty of ethernet cables! Man, I'd rather buy ethernet cables than hd cables any day!

Either way they are pretty cheap. You can get a decent HDMi or Ethernet cable from www.monoprice.com for very little. And they are very good quality.

I checked it out at Santana Row in Santa Clara, CA

The line was too long to get my own hands on it, didn't have the patience to wait 40 minutes. That said they had it on a pathetic 23" Sony LCD 720p.

Two games were playable NBA07, which look ok, but the animations weren't nearly as good as 2K7's. They should have just put 2K7 on there or another game altogether.

Motorsorm looked fantastic, I haven't seen a racer that look remotely as good. Textures on the cars themselves were the week point and which showed in the slow mo crashes with pieces flying all over the screen. But other than that the visuals were great with very well done physics, etc.

The had a video of Gengi which looked sweet, of course the reviews indicate the final game seems to have completely forgeten to add a.i. so it's not worth picking up.

How hilarious would that be if you popped in the game, and the characters all just stood there while you walked through each level. Probably not at all, but you know what I mean.

Awesome to hear about it though, M.C. The early vids of Motorstorm were very cool... glad to see it held up.

I was doing some Christmas and Pinata shopping this afternoon at Target and they had a PS3 set up with the same two games. I had a chance to play a few minutes of NBA 07 and was not at all impressed. NBA 2K7 is so much better that Sony's doing itself a disservice by not having that as a playable game at the kiosks (yes I realize 2K7 is not a Sony first-party title). I don't have any impressions of Motorstorm because I had to focus on Christmas gifts, but what I saw looked impressive.

If you watch the videos at IGN.. It's almost that bad for Gengi 2.. I think like 3 sword slashes in over a minute from the "enemies" in the one video one fire video I watched.

OK, here's one from the 360's book for you. I was at Walmart with my daughter yesterday. They had a PS3 demo unit that was locked up (locked in the middle of a a screen with an airplane flying across it). When I asked the guy who worked there, he mentioned that it had locked a couple of times so far. I told him if he wants to see his name in print, he should call to see if some of the other nearby Walmart's are having the same problems, and if so, call one of the gaming magazines.

Not sure if it is indicative of anything, but it sure was funny after all of the flack MS took about 360 demo units locking up.

lol, well, in defense of both consoles... imagine the amount of abuse those puppies take at walmart, gamestop, target and the like. Every button-mashing, cross-eyed, snot-nosed, cussing six year old on earth runs straight for the display as soon as mom turns her back...

Amazing they aren't twitching and smoking after the first day

Anybody think we'll see a web browser on the 360. I mean if even the Wii and DS can do it (Opera) than M$ should. It would push it over the top in my opinion. Before anyone mentions it, I really don't think it would hurt "WEB TV" sales. I don't know anyone who has that

Yeah... when I worked at CC, ONE person bought it over the course of a few months. It was an older couple, and they were just buying a new one, because a storm took out their previous box.

There was a survey floating around from MS asking about whether people would want a browser or not. I think there will be one, which makes me love the 3-way competition of the consoles. The gamers win the most...

I don't think I would want a browser on Live. Why? Because MS just seems to be the focus of a lot of security issues to get exploited though getting virii in our systems.

The PS3 is more 'open source' IIRC. They said you can put your own OS on it.

Speaking of hands on with a PS3, I apparently missed some opportunities this past week or so to get some hands on time, but am trying to work something out for either this weekend or next week. Hopefully I can have some impressions of my own to offer soon!
