By now, it seems relatively obvious the PlayStation 3 is on the right track. Sales continue to rise and Blu-Ray is poised on the brink of an official format war victory, and in general, Sony is in prime position to hit their sales goals.
According an Associated Press business article that focused mostly on the high-definition movie format war, it seems Sony has reported that they've sold 10.5 million PS3 units worldwide (source-Kotaku). To clarify, Sony is now only counting machines sold to consumers as "units sold;" not consoles retailers buy from Sony. This is excellent news and puts the electronics giant on track to easily hit their goal of 11 million units sold by the end of the fiscal year. However, it's also in strange contrast to Sony's revised projections, which they recently changed from 11 million to 9.5 million. Is Sony further ahead than they think, or is this article using flawed statistical information? We're not really sure, but we figure Sony would know if they were already one million ahead of their fiscal sales goal...
Anyway, we'll be looking into this to see if we can acquire an official "units sold" estimate. Sometimes, the AP can get their facts a little mixed up - remember the New York Times holiday gaming guide that was loaded with errors last year? - so perhaps they're jumping the gun a bit. But if it's true, the PS3 is in an even better position than initially believed.
