WWIII with a Risk map that we play out in online battles in CoD4. | Yep. I forgot that the guys who are new to the site may not be familiar with the War format. That's exactly what the COD3 War was all about. We split the site into two teams (the Blue Army, or cheaters... and the glorious Army of Orange ) and we had a war based on a Risk-style map. If you won an evening's battle, you controlled that portion of the map. The battle maps were tied to specific in-game maps to make sure that every map was played.
It was a lot of fun, although the format wasn't totally free of small issues. This discussion is being done to iron out those little issues.

If the same merc is playing in every game, that guy should've been on a team. Then there's the issue of fairness to the other mercs - say one guy is really good so he's always picked - that leaves the others out... Plus, if there are more mercs than team members, isn't that kinda... off?
I would suggest going with three teams, fill them up, then choose a small pool of peeps to be mercs. Also, last time was a bit confusing when I joined regarding the schedule & I didn't always know if it was a game night or not (two on, one off still sounds cool to me: max war, one weekend R&R). Hey - is there even a sign-up sheet? Knowing how many are into it and how "dedicated" they could be to some sort of roster would help out a lot...

I'm leaning toward the three-team setup and alternating weeks... That way each team would play two on, one off and on the off week people could serve as mercs (and potentially earn enough cash to buy their team a map position). We could handle new free agents the same way we did last year... newbs would play one week as mercs to ascertain their skill level, then we'd have a draft pickup, rotating in the order of neediest team up. We'd stick to it more this time though, not allowing mass upgrades to single teams.
No, there's no signup yet. I was just chilling so far, allowing the idea to develop. If possible, I'd like to post the rules at the same time as signups so people know what they are getting in to.
To clarify the terminology so no one gets confused, there would be 3 armies. Each army officially plays as an army 2 out of 3 weeks by schedule. On your off week, your members can play as mercenaries if needed and earn cash that you can pool (as an army) to purchase territories during the week between rounds. We will keep a small pool of free agents to even out teams if mercs are unavailable.
Does anyone want to allow games on nights other than Friday (impromptu games), or should we go on FNFF only?

One question - if "regular" members consistently don't show up, are they gonna get replaced & put on the mercs list, or just be TK-fodder? LOL

Sunday was a problem for lots of other people. Personally, Saturdays are good for me, but not for others. Friday nights only will be the best bet.

It only gets old when you're playing for three hours straight, each weekend...

There's a whole night to play, we just take up an hour or so for the tourney. As far as the set-up goes, thats all you man. You put all the effort into it.
