PGL Summer GameFest Challenge
This is an idea I've been floating around for a while, and I think it would be great fun doing what we already do on a regular basis: play games.
Here's my pitch: East vs. West (or regional, including Pacific, Mountain, Central, Eastern - whatever works best)... This would include ALL consoles and any PC gaming done here at PGL - basically, we play as normal, but commit like a half-hour to an hour whenever we're playing for the challenge; we keep a running tally for the summer, using certain games we all play on a regular basis (for example GTA IV, GRAW 2, Shadowrun, R6V2, any arcade games, etc - we can pick a bunch of games to use), and everyone only participates in the games they want to play.
At the end of the summer, the team or region with the most points wins 1st place, then second, third, etc.
What do you think of that?

Hey right on - glad to see some interest!
To keep it simple, I was thinking something along the lines of picking 5 to 10 games for each console through voting or whatever... Games we already have or plan on owning shortly, throw in a few arcade games for the fun of it, too. The more genres we can get in, the better (shooters are great, but we have sports, racing, rpgs, etc).
Once we decide which games are for each console (do we even have a PC gaming section? I never bothered to check ), we can simply divide everyone up into a regional team and have like a regional captain, who basically just has to make sure they get the points collected for their region (like a go-to guy/girl). People can set up whatever game modes/options they want.
We can start on a certain day, devote a simple match to the challenge; having just one match is easier to keep track of... Plus, if every region just plays one game per week, it'll help it remain a short, fun event instead of some long, drawn out event. Another good thing about splitting up into four regional teams is that not everyone has to show up for every match, and the teams don't have to be even (well, in-game they do, but not for the overall number of people participating). Jump-ins okay at any time, so long as they're in your region.
We can collect points for say 12 weeks, and can add a game into the rotation at any time. Simple, fun, and quick!
A final idea I had was to pick a member from each region at the end of the challenge as the Regional VIP or something like that, maybe as a vote by region...
Quo, you guys have set up teams before; maybe a list of people and their regions? I don't know if you have that readily available or not... or even needed. I can probably just set up a simple system to say East vs. Pacific in X game/Mountain vs. Central in Y game and those who show up report the points. Man, that's almost too easy!

Hmmm... I don't have anything on file/pc that shows where people are, but I can work a lot up from memory.
How would you want it split up? NE, SE, Central & West Coast? East & West? Give me a geography lesson here... times like this our old frappr map would be very handy.

There is a Gamelink dummy game for what region people are in. That might help some.

Which brings up an interesting problem... time zones. Sometimes it's tough for east coasters to duke it out with you lefties. Any plans on tap for solving that issue?

Well, considering there's a three hour time difference from Pacific to Eastern, we could probably just do this any night of the week (one game, one match per console), that could be played at any time so long as enough people could show up. I think as long as the matches fall within a time frame everyone is cool with, it shouldn't be a problem.
We could set it up into four timezones: Pacific, Mountain, Central, and Eastern; instead of having too many "teams" which could mean some people couldn't show up, there should be more than enough people to fill a quick match.
With four timezone groups, we could have it set up something like: Week one Pac vs. Mtn, Cent vs. Eastern - Week two Pac vs Cent, Mtn vs Eastern - Week three Pac vs. Eastern, Mtn vs. Cent - Week four Pac vs Mtn, etc. Each week is a different game so we don't play the same one vs. every timezone group, but try getting in as many different games as possible. All we'd have to do is figure out which games are played!
What would be awesome is if we could get one person from each timezone, for each console (does Wii have online? LOL I don't have one), who could help coordinate the matches/games. If not - at least one person per console would be a big help... If anyone has suggestions, feel free to add them.
All we really need is a list of great games (both regular and arcade) that enough people have (this way it also won't matter if not everyone has the game & doesn't want to play it).
