So how does this work when some bands have 3 or 4 people playing on expert and some bands only have 2 or 3 people playing on hard or even medium. This seems a little unbalanced and a waste of time for people with lesser skills.

Great question and hopefully this will help answer your question.

This is from the original post that has the details about the contest:

At the end of the contest (4-6 weeks) we will split the bands into two halves based on overall scores. There will be a top and bottom tier. The bands in each tier will all face off one final time, over a two week period. The face off will be based on 4-6 songs and again the top overall score total will win their tier. There will be prizes for the top bands in the both tiers, plus other giveaways. We are going to give out some prizes for the best band name and also for the best band picture. So be sure to dress up some night and post your band pics.

I realize that the skill levels and number of bands members will make the scores vary. So the bands that are very skilled will be put in an upper tier and the other in a bottom tier. That will help balance the bands when the contest comes to an end and the prizes can be earned.

The main purpose of this to get people together playing Rock Band and having fun.

We're taking one more shot tonight; scores coming right at the deadline. It's 11PM Pacific Time, right? I have 11 hours to progress from 99% on hard to 100% on Expert.

Our band is getting together tonight to play and post up our scores. We are like Prince (more people on stage than in the audience), and we have about nine people in our band and we all switch out and take turns playing the various instruments. But here is a run-down:

I think the max difficulty we can do is two people on Hard (Vocals and Bass) and two on Medium (Drums and Guitar).

Question for Supa. When we post our scores I'll try and write down who was playing what on what difficulty. As you can imagine, we have a difficult time getting our band together on a weekly basis so I was figuring while we were all here we'd try and hammer through as many songs tonight as we could and take pictures of our scores to be posted on later weeks. Anyways, would I be screwing things up if I posted scores down the road that didn't have who was playing what?

I suppose it doesn't matter too much as we could only hope to be the opening act for Beastslayers!

Sam...Don't worry about posting who was playing what. The picture will let us know the difficulty and it will show a name also.
