Join Date: May 2007 Location: Durham,England. Age: 18 | Thinking of getting a Alienware with VISTA. Around what price am I looking at for a good one. Gonna get a laptop in cyborg green they look ace, with vista for PC gaming and college work, general surfing. Round what specs should I look for and how much is it gonna set me back roughly?
Also thinking it be cool for the rts games ect that come out to link to my Tag for extra GS lol (scorewhoring on a pc, whats next? lol) but nah, I miss my pc gaming it would be cool and I'd feel like im not abandoning my xbox when playing my pc due to the games being linked to the same tag, I like what ms is doing its like a online handle u can eventually gonna be able to use forever, wouldnt be suprised if MMORPGS get linked to em, do XXX quest with a Dwarf or something on wow or some shite lol.

| Honestly, I don't think Alienware are the way to go.
They are WAYYYYYY over-priced. Sure you might get a cool looking system, but honestly, does it matter that much? Is it worth the HEFTY premium?
There are plenty of laptops out there that are incredibly capable and cheaper than Alienware.

| I think the lower end machines of Alienware are a bit overpriced. But if you're getting one with more of the latest and greatest hardware, they're actually not that bad. The base systems don't usually need that much upgrading as you would we say an IBM, Gateway, and (possibly) Dell. Don't forget, Dell did acquire Alienware about a year ago.
There are plenty more pricey gaming PC manufactures such as VoodooPC, Northwestern (I believe that is their name).
As to what specs you need, that's a very gray area. Any true gaming PC will be able to handle all your surf and school needs, unless you're a major like computer animation and the school uses the lastest softwar releases; I think CAD may be hardware intensive as well. The bigger question is what kind of gaming you do, and how long do you plan to keep the machine. The longer you plan to keep it, the more powerful it's going to need to be today so you can still game with it when you plan to replace it. Another plus would be to get something that is upgradable. Not all laptops are easily upgradable. Also, don't forget that hardware on laptops is significantly more expensive compared to a desktop.
As someone who actually ownes an alienware laptop (m5100), I have a mix opinion of alienware. See the newer thread about problems with PCs, and I have a summary on it. We also have an alienware desktop (area51).

I have always wanted a Alienware but when it comes to PC's / Laptops I'm always around bang for the buck. I went with a Dell Inspiron E1705 loaded up instead. Now that they are owned by that evil PC manufacture Dell I'm not sure what to think.

| I agree with Jon on this one. I think they are way over priced even for the newest technology. I would go with an XPS myself. | |

| who's need battery life, LOL. I get about 30 to 45 minutes on my Alienware Laptop. Of course, in reality it is really a desktop in a portable case. Literally. It has a desktop CPU and weighs about 15 to 20 lbs. Heck, the powerbrick is almost the size the 360's. | |

| yea, it's very heavy for a laptop. I remember I brought it to work (before my department was closed) and the IST guys saw. They were floored by how big and heavy it was.
Then again, I get desktop replacements. I don't drag my laptop everywhere. I just wanted something smaller, per se, to a desktop, and had the ablity to take with me when I go somewhere for the weekend. I just don't really like using other people's computers, especially if I don't have to.
I have an older laptop that's an IBM. It's really light compared to the Alienware. The IBM has two batteries, and I get almost 3 hours of battery time. I take the Alienware to the backyard, I use an extention cord, and plug it into the outdoor electic socket and use it on the patio table.

| Nothing wrong with that. Dell's, if memory serves me well, are still a good machine. | |

| I got the 21" widescreen LCD that I use for the PC and gaming too. Nice monitor. Been a bit more game console friendly if it had a component in. And save me a ton of desktop space too. | |
