Yes, they took the whole thing too seriously, but this kind of thing is good in my opinion. Some people only understand a fist to the nose unfortunately. It is not against the law to be an @hole, but it really should be.
In my youth before the internet, people would chat on CB radios and there was always some annonymous dickhead that would talk smack and try to ruin everyones good time. I actually remember one in particular that was on the radio all summer running his pie-hole and pissing everyone off.
A few guy got together and triagulated his signal and tracked him down to him house. I know they ripped down his antenna and broke a few windows, but they also kept going back for a few months and egging his house.
Not that any of this stuff is "right" but damn is it funny when a jerk gets a taste of their own medicine.
