Darwinia may have been one of the finest independently crafted games of last year, but 'last of the bedroom programmers' Introversion haven't sat on their laurels. Instead, they've been busy plotting the evolution of their opus, with a multiplayer version due out in 2008. Multiwinia is the order of the day, with a full standalone release on the cards for the PC, next year.
The new title will allow you to guide your Tron-esque forces into battle against other players, with a full singleplayer campaign also included, alongside a few new modes to add spice.
"We've always known that Darwinia would naturally evolve into an incredible multiplayer game. Right from day one I had visions of massive Darwinian armies converging for the ultimate Darwinian death-fest", beamed Introversion director Chris Delay.
The game will be spruced to use DirectX 10 and Windows Vista, we learn, and the gameplay / tactical controls have also been tweaked. "We've created a new formation mode which will let you organise your Darwinians into ranks to create massive armies," designer John Knottenbelt tells us. "In formation they'll have greater firepower in the direction they're facing, but virtually none from either sides or behind. It's going to get pretty messy, requiring a whole new set of tactical skills from the gamer."
Introversion have previously created Uplink and Defcon, with Darwinia being distributed via Steam. The developer are also plotting projects for the PS3 Online or Xbox Live, according to murmurings made to Eurogamer.net, but nothing is official yet. More soon.
