Nyko Classic Controller Grip Overview

Nyko Classic Controller Grip Overview
By: Peench

Let's face it, Nintendo has barrels of games under their belt based on years of being in the gaming business. In fact, they regularly release 3 old-school titles to their Wii Shop store each week. To play these games you can often use old GameCube controllers, or you can opt for a Nintendo Classic Controller.

I didn't have any gamecube controllers laying around the house so I bought a Nintendo Classic Controller. The Nintendo Classic Controller plugs directly into the Wiimote thereby obtaining power and wireless capabilities. While the result is cool, you must keep the Wiimote by your side and weave the wire along a safe path to the Classic Controller. When games get hectic the Wiimote may go flying thereby throwing off your perfect game of Mario Bros!

At E3 I visited Nyko's booth and saw more than a few great products they are offering for all consoles. One of the products that I found brilliant was the Classic Controller Grip. The Grip itself is made up of two parts: a controller extension (grip) and a Wiimote holder.

These two pieces fit together ingeniously and create a perfect way to enjoy classic gaming on the Wii.

I started with everything I needed to put the puzzle together:

Without the Nyko Classic Grip I would play with the wire from the Classic Controller snaking its way to the Wiimote. The wire got in the way and often fouled up my gaming experience. This is no fun.

The Classic Controller fits snugly into the Grip and snaps into place using the two nubs on the Grip and the two holes in the back of the Classic Controller:

The end result is a controller that more closely resembles most modern controllers with an added gripping surface/handles:

The wire from the Classic Controller snakes out of the hole in the back of the Grip:

From here it is a matter of attaching the Wiimote and wrapping the Wiimote cord around the cord management system. These steps are just as easy.

The Wiimote slides into the Nyko holder:

The Wiimote (now in its case) then attaches to the back of the Classic Controller with the use of two clips.

This part actually threw me off at first as I didn't realize that I had to press a button on the top of the Classic Controller to allow the catch on the Controller to release:

Once I figured this out the Wiimote popped firmly into place.

From here it was simply a matter of wrapping the Classic Controller cord around the cord management provided by the Grip:

As clean as a freshly washed car and as shiny as a freshly polished Wondermonkey's head, once put together, the Nyko Classic Controller Grip is a thing of beauty.

The extra grip allowed me to hold the controller much more firmly and easily:

Once put together the weight of the combined Classic Controller is obviously increased by the weight of the Wiimote. This additional weight is offset, however, by the additional grip provided by the Classic Controller Grip. The end result is a a balanced controller that saves the hassle of finding a place on your lap for the Wiimote while playing classic Nintendo games.

Another benefit is the ability to simply choose on-screen items by pointing the Controller Grip towards the television. This was easier than using the Wiimote to start up the game, then putting it down, then grabbing the Classic Controller, then playing. Since both the Wiimote and the Classic Controller are now integrated, you can plop down on the couch and get your classic Nintendo gaming on without any unnecessary delays!

Newegg carries the Nyko Classic Controller Grip for $9.99. For $10, the Nyko Classic Controller Grip is a Nintendo accessory that everyone who plays classic games on their Wii should have.

Looks rather genius and I'm sure its a better value than a lot of the other Wii accessories that are just plastic. This one actually seems down right useful.

If I ever buy a Wii I'm sure that I would pick this one up.
