Just in case some of you wanted to know more about this, here's what my fellow alumni is writing, so far, based on his survey results:
Quote:
Essentially my thesis statement is.
Despite declining sales, profits could be maximized by major record labels by marketing their albums according to long tail theory instead of the more traditional model having a few mega hits each year.
Since long tail theory involves harnessing the power of niche markets, I have to first define the boundaries of the niche markets that buy albums and their current motivations.
As far as motivation goes, I haven't done the regression necessary to answer that. I will say that nearly half my survey prefers to buy CDs so far, and most people don't download illegal music (by a smidge). The main reason people don't buy CDs that like them is the price point. I figured that availability of online music would be the main reason, and it does have an affect, just not as much as cost of a CD. I thought it would be the opposite.
