I usually don't buy warranty's/replacement guarantee's but this sounds like a deal. So I checked The Sharper Image web site. They have the 605 160gb for $499. I bought mine on Amazon for $382.
I'm trying to decide if I want to return mine to Amazon and pay an extra $180 to get the one from Sharper Image with a guarantee.
The 605 I have now has audio problems anyway.

Ok looks like im needed, as i know the ins and outs of the Sharper Image guarantee.

First off peench its not 180 for the Guarantee, Although id say hurry and do it because the loop hole trick ive been suggesting has been taking its toll and the Replacement Guarantee (RSG) will be raising in price. (This was disclosed at our last meeting) So what will happen is, Purchase the Archos and feel free to open a Credit card if you want, it will knock off an additional 15% off the Archos itself and THE GUARANTEE, and its instant approval for use on that purchase(just dont forget to cancel and pay the charge in full, cause Intrest is like 22%)

But even if you dont pick up a 2 or 3 year, what you have to remember is that the return is 14 day and 10% restocking if returned, and the guarantee is a 1 time replacement, and if they dont have the product you get the full price of the Archos unit plus tax(in store credit) but not the guarantee back. So if it breaks go get another in store and renew your guarantee. The best part is getting your $499 back (even if 2 years later price on the 605 drops) and picking up the new model 2 or 3 years from now.

Depending on the Original warranty on the Archos(90 day maybe), the RSG will make it unlimited swap outs within that time period. after that its a one time exchange, or store credit back, you exchange just repurchase guarantee then repeat. Its amazing if you do it right, you could make that $499 last you for like 5 years and keep getting new gadgets.

The RSG is tax free also, with an option of 2 or 3 year. Ask the associate at Sharper Image(Which would be more than willing to help you, especially if you say "ill most likley want an RSG, Please explain it to me and how i could use the RSG to Upgrade later." also ask what the Manufacturers Warranty is and if during that time period the Swap outs if defective will be unlimited)

I exchaned it once already. This is the second one! So Amazon wants to give me a refund instead of a 3rd unit.

I got mine from Amazon... Do you have any local shops that carry it? Maybe a Circuit City? At least you could bring a laptop with some files and stuff with you and play them before even leaving if it will work on a few minutes of charge.

What a huge pain for you though. Did you check out the Archos forums here?

Just a quick thanks for all the help and advice. I really appreciate it. I still have the defective unit, and a prepaid return form. I'll keep everyone posted on what happens in case this happens to another poor soul.
