What are you listening to?

It better not be your own CD collection ripped to you hard drive and streaming it through your Xbox 360, PS3, or portable music player.

This means that the RIAA is saying it could actually come after anyone who has ever used a CD ripping program to transfer tracks from a disc to a computer, regardless of whether or not file sharing was involved.

Yeah, and then they wonder why CD sales are down 20% this holiday season from last year.

The RIAA is doing it to themselves, and I for one welcome it. Radiohead ****ed them hard in the end (pun intended) and other artists will hopefully follow suit.

That's absurd. It also says, "If you make unauthorized copies of copyrighted music recordings... you could be held legally liable for thousands of dollars in damages."

What damages?

Damages to what the record could have sold if you didn't pirate it. Which, theoretically could be in the millions I suppose.

So I guess they're saying that if you copy from a legal and authorized CD that you own to your PC, you are causing damages because they could have sold that song/album to you over the internet as well? .. Wow.

Yeah, the whole situation is pretty much moronic. I don't see under what grounds they can do this to us... we own the music. we just want to stream it to our other stuff...

Well, you don't own the music, really. Those are the grounds. The RIAA operates under archaic copyright laws, and unless those are changed or the RIAA decides to change their business model (highly unlikely) these lawsuits will continue.

This is a good perspective on the whole shebang.

Meh, as long as you protect yourself it is very difficult for any of the big brothers to catch you. The people that get caught are just too stupid to conceal.

zombie is an unknown quantity at this point

I won't be purchasing any more music until they update the purchases to include a license to include the "upgrade" of the music to different media. Bear with me, but I'm old. At one time, I had over 400 LPs. Then came 8 track...smart me ignored it, and they came up with the cassette. I upgraded most of my collection and had almost 300 tapes when out popped the CD. I upgraded some more and have over 800 CDs, about 75% of which I ripped to my computer and then transferred to my MP3 player(s!). Today I have a 1 TB media drive on my wireless network sharing over 2000 songs and about 300 movies, including home movies and pictures. I once had over 400 VHS tapes, and today have over 400 DVDs (about 30% I had on tape). The RIAA and MPAA should have no say in what I choose to do with these (unless I copy and sell them to make money.) Granted I have movies and songs downloaded that I never owned, but the way I look at it, the RIAA and MPAA owes me for all the money I've lined their pockets with.

I feel that the future will bring digital downloading to the forefront. I believe that theaters will either go broke or a consumer will receive a DVD (when released) with the purchase of a $15 ticket.

I know exactly what they are saying...and they are Bat-Shit crazy for it.

They are saying that they can sue you for damages if you copy your cd to your hard drive as a backup. The damages comes from you losing your CD and they making a copy of it from your harddrive. If you didnt rip your cd to your cpu, Then you would of had to go buy another CD, but since you did, The RIAA lost an additional sale of the cd...even though you had bought one but just lost it. = BAT "****ING" SHIT CRAZY! <--- Cursing Intended!

I hate the RIAA, and if they seen my collection they would hate me too. TOO BAD my collection got wiped out from my Cpu when it broke down....all i have now is cd copies.

In the UK it is no longer illegal to copy music for your own personal use.

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | UK music fans can copy own tracks

The thing that get's me is that way back when I was a kid, it was someone giving me a Tape with Nirvana's Nevermind on one Side and Pearl Jam's One on the other which got me into the music that I love. And whilst my tastes have changed over the years to incorperate a much more diverse range of music, it all goes back to that point where I can pinpoint falling in love with music in general.

By stopping people being able to share music, be it online or with CD's they are closing out a lot of people who may not have the chance to find what they enjoy, and to that end they are really shooting themselves in the foot.

Well now the RIAA is trying to make it illegal here in the states to copy music, even if you own it, to a computer or put it on a portable device.
