itunes v8 warning

Saw this and thought I would throw a heads up.

We were all excited to stream Genius-generated playlists from iTunes 8 to our Airport Express last night when -- poof -- "-3256 Unknown Error Occurred." This cryptic error, along with another under the equally descriptive name "-15000," has been keeping iTunes 8 upgraders from using their Airtunes on remote speakers. Turns out the issue is one of Firewalls and Firmware. The solutions come from users at Apple's discussion boards. Basically, you need to either turn off your Firewall and / or allow iTunes to accept incoming requests or update your Airport Express to the latest (7.3.2 as of this post) firmware version via AirPort Utility 6.3. Meanwhile, Windows-based iPod touch users are seeing Blue Screens of Death when plugging in their players due to some other undocumented problem. The solution there looks to be a reboot with the touch plugged in to force the system to recognize the device, run a sync, and turn off photo syncing (not the most elegant solution, clearly). Let's hope Apple at least updates this with something more descriptive than "-3256" in the future. Customer service reps at Apple say they're aware of the problems and are working on a fix.

So this is only an issue for people that have Airport Express?

Streamed the genius playlists to the 360 last night = AWESOME!

EDIT: Yes, the -3256 error is only for users with Airport Express.

The iPod Touch issue is Vista Only. Here's the discussion.

It's also an issue for iPod Touch users, which is why I'm staying away from iTunes 8 until they fix it.

Hopefully this isn't connected but I downloaded Genius along with Itunes 8 or 9 (I can't keep up with all the updates) the other night. I go upstairs, put on airtunes, and Itunes crashes. I go back downstairs to restart and Itunes and it says the file has been corrupted and wala, I am missing about 1700 songs. Fortunately I have them on my touch, but I'd recommend anyone updating to back up all their songs.

I'd hold off. I updated to I tunes v8 and when streaming to express Itunes crashed. When I rebooted all but 80 of my 1800 songs were corrupted. I'm hoping I can resynch with no ill effects but I'm going to burn an image of my touch to my HD first before attempting.

Apple can motherf$#$#$# kiss my a#$. I figure seeing as my library got corrupted, but my touch still contains all my songs, I should be good to go. So I hook back up my touch to resync and after transferring about 400 songs it stops and deletes everything else on my touch. 1400 songs gone with no way to recover them. To say I'm pissed would be a huge understatement.

alter - let us know what the latest is. I hope you're able to recover or be reimbursed somehow for all of the songs and get this issue fixed!

I upgraded to 2.1 and iTunes v8 and had no issues with my itouch or Vista. I will say itunes is slower then ever. It is driving me nuts.

People may hate me for saying this but with the album art enabled iTunes now reminds me of the Zune desktop....sloooow..

I turned mine off and went back to the old style of browsing (with the thumbnail on the side and all of the tracks listed) and iTunes seems to flow much more efficiently.

Question: is this streaming issue a problem only when doing so from iTunes w/ a Touch? If I use WMP or WMC and have an iPhone I should be completely unaffected.

I use the Cover Flow view. It's so damn pretty, it's hard not to.

The streaming issue seems to only be a problem if you are streaming to AirTunes. You should be completely unaffected.

Thanks Cory. There is no way Apple will reimburse me, no use even bothering. It's partly my fault, I should have backed up everything before updating.

On the positive side, airtunes, 2.1, and 8 are working fine together.
